I have just purchased a early 1970 Superclassic that is a real mess. Inside shells have been painted with black gloss paint !!! My question is - does anyone know what the inside finish of these shells are. I am going to strip the black gloss of and recover with original finish. Please help. Answers to either here or barretp@hotmail.co.uk. Thanks

I have a vintage Leedy Ludwig snare that is painted cream white on the inside of the shell. It's all original, too. My father was the original owner, and that's the way the drum came. It's over 50 years old. That snare sounds fantastic, too.

Most Ludwig drums are painted with Ludwigs patented "reso-cote" white paint, so yeah, white is the original colour.

This may be a little confusing so bear with me on this one................

In 1961 Ludwig switched from a clear lacquer interior finish to white paint, which they used (except for larger 18" floor toms which were left unfinished) until 1967..............

In 1968 Ludwig changed back to a natural finish with the exception of their Standard Series which switched directly to their "Granitone" finish. By 1970 nearly all shells began to receive interior Granitone paint.......

Beginning in 1976 the interior of Ludwig's Classic Series went back to a clear coat interior.................

The Granitone finish was a speckled gray-like color............

I looked up an old shell with the Granitone Finish so you can have a look. You know what "they" say, a picture is worth a thousand words......
