I have to put in a good word for this kit. I played a 5-pc kit with a 24" kick. Here are some strong points:

Brutally powerful kick drum. It sounded terrific with just a Yamaha powerstroke 3 batter and stock reso, no muffling. Focus, massive low end and solid punch

The toms cut through better than almost any other kind of wood drum

The honey amber is a beautiful finish

The price is intermediate...just about the price of Mapex Saturn.

It's a Yamaha kit.

I tried the kit with a stock clear amb on top. It was too bright for me. A coated ambassador just made a huge difference. These might be one of the ultimate "live" kits. I know John Bonham would have loved these. They sounded louder to me than the maple Ludwig kits.

This kit will not likely find favor in the studio.

Keith Carlock plays clinics live with this kit, but records on maple.

Glad you like them. Not my cup of tea, but they are famous for their ability to cut. Great price as well.

In the end, they remained a strong contender. They were unique, but my favorite overall had to be the Pearl Reference.

The oak do cut and look gorgeous, but weren't rich enough in the midrange for me at the end of the day.

The snare and kick were the best features.

Great kits, punchy, but not flexible enough IMO

That's probably the term I was fishing for. The oak's charactaristics do kind of narrow it's applications. It's like the anti-maple.

Last week I purchased a new SUV. One of those big enough to haul my kit in...you know the one with the Hemi...

Anyway, it came with 1 year free Sirius satellite radio. I heard that line on one of the rock stations (hair nation IIRC). I thought it was funny, because I had just left an ATM and that line came on...

The other one was a fake argument between two "Brooklyn mooks." One guy played annoyed with the other. "If youze don't shut up, I'm gonna trow a rock thru yer front teeth."

I almost went off the road at that point...

How do the toms/floor toms sound on the Oak Custom? I know already that they have incredible attack, but are they warm, or open, focused, or bright?

They have a sound that has attack and brightness that goes past birch in that area. But they do have some warmth in the middle.

I'd have to say oak would be best for those looking for a "live" sound, not a studio sound.

Definitely not a studio kit! They’re a pain to get a good mix out of. I much prefer birch in the studio – actually as an all-round kit I prefer birch - IMO

As an all-around kit I prefer woven carbon fiber. #Scatter

i used a Yamaha Oak Custom at a concert miced up and a mate has used one. I really didnt like it. It was SO deep the tone and stuff it just was to deep on the mics and stuff. Yeh bottom end it hammers but it`s just so deep with tone that it doesnt cut over guitars and stuff.

But if you really like it and are over the moon good on ya! Enjoy!

....the oaks have always had notorious disdain for the maples. rush even recorded a song about it Smile
