Question Question I recentely cancelled an order for a pdp fxr shell pack. I am still
looking for a second "workhorse" kit preferably birch or birch/basswood etc. I have seen numerous ads for Taye drums. They look like they're
put together quite well. The pro x 5pc w/hardware comes in right at my budget of $700. I have played Pearl drums for 20 plus years. I love my
BRX's! But now I find myself looking outside of the norm. Past the Tama, Ludwig, pdp,Pearl etc. I want something a bit off the beatin path. Taye really caught my eye. haha that rhymed! Whatever. Any one out there have any experience with this brand? The Pro X in particular. Any info would help. I've been to Taye's website and am impressed-so far. Anyone who owns a set of these drums please post a reply. I have been thru sooo many on line catalogs, played so many different kits, (shout out to GC in Milwaukee) It's time I made a decision. Thanks. #Crazy

Well, someone else on here does have a Taye, so I can't speak personally from experience. However I do know that Ray Ayotte is behind Taye, and that could mean very good things.

I tought they were all high-end.
Don't forget to post a review if you end up getting that set.
Why exactely did you decided on cancelling the FXR order?

Yeah, Taye makes a full line of drums from the entry-entry level Astro kits to the studio maple. They all look very very nice. As far as to why I cancelled the fxr's... I have been hearing negative things with regards to the integrity of the shells. Aparentely the hoops are not seating properly
on the shell. The bearing edges which pdp calls "pro cut" aren't so pro after all. From what I've heard, the edges dont hold up for the long haul. Also I have heard that there is a delamination issue with regards to wood plys Shocked Now, I don't want to piss off any Pacific afficiandos. The drums flat out sound sweet! However, I absolutely NEED to have equipment that can take a good spanking and hold it's own. I play out ALOT and the stuff HAS to handle some pretty extreme #Onfire (pardon my use of that word) conditions. The pdp's are beautiful, but a beautiful kit ain't worth s@*t
if the shell plys are flappin in the breeze. I believe, at least for now, that
this may be an isolated problem. It may even be owner neglect. ie; damp basements and garages or?? Unfortunately, this was enough for me to rethink pdp's birch drums. I'll hold onto my sheckles and keep looking. I'm still trying to locate, on this forum, someone who has some experience with the Taye Rock pro or Pro X kits. Peace

I know of a company here in Canada coming out with a higher end mid-line 100% maple kit in the next few weeks. They'll probably run around $1500us for a 5 piece shell pack. The huge selling point on these is that they'll be "handcrafted" right here in Canada with precision hand polished offset cut bearing edges. They'll be available in around 7 different laminate finishes and over 40 wrap finishes to choose from (these will be glued not taped on)
If you want more info i can try to answer any questions from what i know.

Shocked Are you refering to Ayotte? I have a friend that owns a 6pc. Ayotte with maple hoop rims on all the drums. Oh Canada! Probably the very best maple kit I've ever played. I've played a few. Anyway, I'm not sure I'm ready to part with $1500 for a secondary "workhorse" kit. It would be great to own a nice lacquer/laminate finish maple kit and $1500 USD sounds like a decent price, however I'm looking for a DURABLE nice sounding kit that I'm not going to cry over if I put a scratch in the floor tom. My price limit is $800. I have to stay true to that. I appreciate the imput. Are there any other options out your way other than these maple drums you wrote about? Somewhere in the Pearl Export neighborhood. Question

Taye, as I was informed: Made in China, and Ray Ayotte is no longer associated with them.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? Dealers insist Ray is sticking to his namesake company.

And Ayotte are made in Canada.

Shocked Shocked Shocked I didn't hear THAT one. I have to do a little research. As for being made in China, I already figured as much. Kits in this price range are generally produced in a country where English is NOT the primary language. Often times China, Indonesia, Mexico etc. So The fact that Taye drums are manufactured overseas is no surprise. Sonor Force series drums are made in China. Enough said. If Ray did in fact Leave Taye, that would make me rethink Taye drums. Hmmmm... Rolling Eyes

Taye are very nice. As to country of origin, Mapex, Gretsch, Sonor, Ludwig, Tama and Pearl all have great products that come from there. Yamaha stage customs are only mahogany and falkata made in Indonesia. But they are a superb kit for the money--nice sound and rock solid quality.

Buy what you want based on sound and that gut feeling you get when looking at and playing them. Nevermind where they are made, or who makes them. That's a slippery slope there...

You got that right. Well, I guess I'll have to do a bit more poking around.
It's quite exhausting. I've been at this for a while now Confused

Tell me about it! I wanted to get a kit that was either exceptional intermediate, or no B.S. pro kit. I tried everything- and the most impressive wood drums were the Pearl reference. I even looked into vintage kits as well.

But then, for a variety of reasons, I decided to take the plunge and get a Tempus kit. I started trying stuff *months* ago. It took a long time to decide, because I wanted to be sure the kit was exactly what I wanted, not what I *almost* wanted.

Yeah, that's what I'm going through. I went through it last year when I bought my Masters BRX kit! This purchase is for a beater kit. When I say "beater", I mean a secondary kit to use for practice and gigging.. a "workhorse"to take some of the wear and tear off my expensive birch drums. The market, as you can imagine is FLOODED with kits in the $500 to $800 range! It really is mind boggling. That plus the fact that the nearest drum shop is over an hour and a half away-oh woe is me. I think I'll be making the "pilgrimage" this weekend to try out some more stuff including the Taye pro x. If you have any ideas please shoot 'em my way. Wink

No, they're EPEK! The new line will be called EPEK MLX. They come in 6 or so laminate solid colors or a whole bunch of choices of wrapped finishes. The price could be even a little better then what i previously mentioned, but it's still a great price for a hand-crafted Canadian made set of maple drums!! I do understand the durability/price range. I have a gigging kit that i use for the out door/jam stuff but i still try to keep it in really good shape....
