| Im getting one. A brand new one out of the box. No old ghettos or anything. Ya, I'm excited. But all these posts about rims not fitting, bearing edges getting rough and splitting kinda scares me. Is it all true? It looks soooo nice and sounds good too but I dont want to walk into problems. Please help me. |

Yes, it happens. I'd say the frequency is at least 50% of pacific drums, at least those made in Mexico.
I look at them without bias or rose colored glasses. I know what I have seen firsthand in a number of shops.
I like the sound of Pacific, but could not buy one due to the flaws. |

given the anecdotal information, i would be reluctant to purchase pacific drums until the quality control issues are no longer so prevalent in either written or verbal discourse.
it sounds like your purchase is a done deal. if you are picking them up at a store, do not pay until you inspect the merchandise. if the drums in route to you from a dealer, verify the dealer's return policy, make sure you understand it and follow the portion that applies to you, the customer.
if you're buying them from a person - meaning your money's going to a private individual and not a business - contact pacific drums. get the name and phone number of the pacific drums customer service representative with whom you speak and note the date and time of the call. before you hang up, get the name of that person's manager.
ask for a copy of the return policy/warranty repair to faxed or mailed to you.... something on pacific drums letter head, with a date and citation of the policy (the website's nice, but any company may say "our website content's not up to date").
companies typically do not make an effort to inject substandard product into the market place brandishing their badge.
yes, it happens, but usually, it's because of a chain of unfortunate errors. companies like pacific *should* stand by their products and make it right. will they? i don't know. i hope so. if you have a defective product, their policy should allow for a replacement if it left their factory within x number of days, weeks or months. you might have to pay shipping; it's rarely free, even if it wasn't your fault; that's the breaks.
if you can't get a replacement, call that customer service rep first (it's polite). if you can't get cooperation, escalate to that person's supervisor.
always be patient. never let frustration creep in over the phone. speak like an actor playing a doctor on tv if you an example.
if you still can't get a replacement or a repair, never patronize them again, tell all your friends about your experience and let the attrition of revenue toward pacific drums end their production naturally.
lastly, understand that companies often won't honor warranties to anyone but the first retail customer. i don't know if any drum manufacturer has a warranty policy that transfers to a someone that didnt' purchase from a dealer.
being a grown up is nothing like i imagined as a child. not even close. |

I disagree in part. I just had a look at 3 different kits in three different shops. Each exhibited flaws that should not be there.
It's great that a set was purchased without flaws...or was it?
Have all the drumheads been off and all bearing edges and seams been closely examined? What about hardware alignment?
See, I know a guy that returned 2 different sets before he bailed to mapex. This was in the past few months. It's very relevent.
Pacific does not now have the QC that most other name brands have. They are still pumping out flawed stuff.
Sure, they will replace it, but it should not have been messed up to begin with.
Again I submit, Pacific's QC is hit or miss, here and now in September of 2006. |

i completely agree. SyntheticTubs, your information is entirely relevant and i'm glad you typed it.
it's entirely possible that the management at the PDP factory is asleep at the wheel.
consumers - esp those of us who work for a living - who do not make thousands of dollars per month should buy instruments in person.
all consumers should inspect merchandise before payment and walk away if the gear has problems.
you should never love a name so much you'd suffer inferior gear.
if drummers receive poor drum-manufacturing from an on-line source, they should complain to the selling party and the manufacturer. complaints in writing should be well-written, brief and contain a defined action item:
i want a refund of $<whatever>
i want a replacement of <whatever>
i want a trade this in for its competition in the <mapex|sonor|whatever> line.
honestly, some dealers are run by unqualified retail persons. if a business can't move gear because of manufacturing defects, the should say something and stop ordering... they should also forward complaints from customers.
if conditions warrant, the inventory should be sent back and should make pacific drums (re-) earn the business, (re-) earn the right to consume pricy, but vital retail floor space.
business should be calling the competition to say "i can't sell pacific drums any more. you want their floor space?"
if you're a dealer, write and talk to regional sales. explain no more product will come in the door until they admit the problem and explain, in writing, measures taken to assure it doesn't happen again.
small shops - which are best shops - can't afford this nonsense any more than we can.
change starts with the one that complains. if the complaint's valid, be the first. if you can't be first, be the loudest (polite and convincing, not rude or violent). |

| Will the flaws be apparent right out of the box or does it show up after use? I was just curious because GS just called and told me my PDP MX just came in and I can p/u anytime. After reading this, I'm obviously having second thoughts. What should I look for? Will the bearing edges be rough? thanks in advance for a reply. |

I have seen several PDP's and never noticed any problems with them.
Ihave been playing mine (LX) for 2 years now, and everything works like a charm.
Hardware holds up very well, and they've been transported quite a lot.
Bearing edges are perfect, so are the drums inside.
No fawls on the lacquer finish.
Chrome still looks like new, even without having them cleaned once.
Some lugs tend to loosen up after some playing, that's the only thing I can think of as a comment, but I put a new rubber ring between the bolt and hoop, and it's perfect now.
Sturdy, nice looking, complete, well priced, easy-to-tune drums.
That's how I think about them. _________________

recognizing defects - unfortunately - takes practice and experience.
do not let fear paralyze you from moving forward. that's the most important thing; make your decision and be ok with it.
it's wise to be prudent, but there is a point of diminished returns - where being overly cautious results in an unfufilling life.
if you've a mentor, ask your mentor to accompany you to the store for examination of the merchandise.
if you've no mentor, perhaps you can set up the drums in the shop before you take them home.... tune the drums, adjust the tom mounts, ask why <something> is easier to on your new kit than the last kit you set up, why <something else> doesn't just fall into place like the last kit you set up.
i think if you use them before you cart them home, you'll have a pretty good understanding of what you bought and weather you like it or not. |

You know that's a rather ambiguous, or at least ascientific, assessment. I mean, everything there could be attributed to human error. For example, heads, which have no bearing on the drum itself, do not just break right out in the vast majority of cases. So, to have it happen to at least two drums (perhaps five, but that's unclear) is improbable and statistically impossible. Now, if the heads were tuned very tightly that would both ruin the sound and stress the heads perhaps more towards breaking, but that still has no bearing on the drum itself.
I guess what I'm saying is that "X sucks, {A, B, C} bad things happened" doesn't actually help people out and as a blanket statement might serve to turn away people that would have otherwise enjoyed what is demeaned. _________________ So with that title, do I Godwin every thread now?
