Hi, I'm Layke (lake). I originate from Ontario, Canada eh? I got into drumming when in grade 1 my dad bought a really nice set called Roy (which happend to also be his name lol!). I didn't get good at all, and only had them for a year or two, and I didn't play them much, but I taught myself the basics on keeping a steady beat. Fast forward 12 years and I have another set (Westbury) which are shiney silver that I got out of the blue from dad Smile. I have:
-snare
-bass
-hi hats
-2 toms/floor tom
2 symbols - 1 a zildjian, the other is camber
a camber ride
2 sets of rock sticks, 1 of 5A (Zildjian, if it matters)

I've broken about 6 sticks in a few months, except the heavy 'rock' sticks, which I love Very Happy I've also broken a symbol and a stand so far. I've taken off the front of the bass and threw in some blankets for dampening. Just some problems I noticed when playing, is that the bass drum will move away from me every time I hit the kick, and I'll eventually have to stop and reposition. Could this be because it's on carpet? I guess I'll just have to put something in it's way. It seems like every few days I will try different beats and I recognize that my skills are heightening. I'm not great, but I'm not aweful, either. I get about 30 minutes on them MOSTLY every day, not straight 30 minutes, but 10mins here and there. I'm trying to drum to slipknot's toxicity, eventually adding more to my ability, but since I can't read tabs it's all ears. I listen to a lot of tool, and someday hope I can play something like parabola or eulogy. That 'machinegunsmith' guy on youtube is fackin' awesome!!!

Welcome sir. I suggest editing your initial post so that it reads:

I've also broken a cymbal

Just so the other forum members don't tease you mercilessly. Very Happy

As for the kick, make sure the legs (of the kick drum) are well planted into the carpet, as your foot maybe kicking too hard. Carpet is something that usually keeps the kick drum from moving.

Welcome Nicodemus.

Dunomous' guidance is well-considered, but should you fail to heed, you won't be crucified or anything.

Welcome to Drumdogs.

When you are pushing the bass drum outwards, it can be a case where you are pushing while kicking.

Try pushing straight down on the pedal instead of outward.

It won't require much retraining on your part but to help with the retraining, make sure that your femur (upper leg) is as parallel to the floor as you can get. This helps eliminate some of the "swing" you may be having with your foot. Just a guess without more information.

The less your leg angles down towards the bass drum, the less likely you'll be kicking at it.
