Tuning a Duggi Tarang

I was given these for Xmas, they're from the local trade aid shop. the tag says 'Duggi Tarang' - made in India..



So, I'm pretty sure they are the same as these though there are 2 not 3 drums.

My question is what is the right method of tuning? they are sounding a bit flat..
I would have said that all of the lugs should be evenly tightened but at the moment, some are tighter than others (this may just be because of people playing with them in the shop) The staff of course know nothing and there doesn't seem to be any tuning info for these on the web

Just thought I'd check here first before trying to tighten...

They remind me of Tabla, but short of that I know nothing of Indian percussion.

To me it looks like you got two of the larger drum in a set of Tablas.

Ok well it looks like you've got yourself a set of bayan tablas, the lower pitched ones. Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

So usually the dot in the center of the drum is off-center to provide space for your hand to modulate the pitch. Doesn't look like yours are like that, so that differentiates them a little bit. As for tuning, there's nothing I can find that says you should tune the tension rods differently, so i'd detune all of them to finger tight, then put even tension on them. There's some good links on the wiki page for tabla bol, or the sounds you can make on the drum. These drums are amazing. There's a huge array of different sounds you can make from them. You could probably spend months just learning all the basic sounds. I wish i had a pair of those. That's beyond the range of my pocketbook though. Have fun with those!
