get a cd or mp3 player and put your ear protection on and put the headphones on. it works, thats what i do. Very Happy

yeah, my doc said my hearings ok now, but its gonna suck, so i got meself a pair of Panasonic headsets, the kind that cover your whole ear. They have a button that drowns out all other noises and makes the music clearer.

You can still hear the drums fine, they're just muffled, and the music is easier to hear and play along with (if that's your style, otherwise they work good as earmuffs too)

what do you guys where to concerts? My emyotoic or whatever brand ear plugs seem dangerous to wear to a concert. when you're in the pit, I'm afraid of someone accidentally jamming the thing inside my brain....

concerts, I don't wear anything, don't go often though, when I go I like the full sound

for when I play drums, I used to use little orange no name ear plud thingies amde of foam, but now I have like big time construction ear mufflers, they only cost me about 30 bucks plus they are easier to put on that ear plugs, your ear gunk won't get in them, like my friend who shall remain nameless (lol) and they are also good enough size to put head phones on the inside so I can play along with music.

hope I helped a bit anyway

what about live gigs, do you guys sacrifice the ears when playing live? I use my ear plugs for every practice now which is great, but I"m wondering if I should go Sans plugs for the gig later this month.

its really up to you. if you feel more comfortable playing without ear plugs, then dont wear them live. if you dont mind, then protect your ears.

I played one show so far lol, at school, and I didn't use ear plugs because luckily we weren't too loud, though I couldn't hear the instruments so well

I use Vic Firth isolation headphones when I practice. My kit is always mic'ed and I can connect my iPod to an empty channel on the mixer and play for hours with no ill effects.

Have started wearing ear plugs. Most drummers in Singapore, I noticed, don't wear them, but I think that's an awareness issue. As I say to everyone who questions the need for hearing protection, I'd rather not be deaf.

I'm new to drumming and I play in a small, echo overloaded room in my house. I thought about using ear protection at first but I have yet to use any.

What I have done instead is learned to control the power of my hits so that the drums play at a low volume.

It's funny because when a friend jumps on the kit I'm plugging my ears at how loudly they play and they can't tone it down.

I can play loud and with power but I find it just as easy to play softly and with finesse.

Am I robbing myself of something by doing this?

How so? Finesse? I'm not missing out on anything by not playing hard? Hehe

I do play hard on my practice pad though with the biggest sticks guitar center had, usually until I get a good muscle burn. Never on the drumset though.

PS how often does one usually replace the batter heads when you don't beat them up?
