I was wondering if anyone has tried this, or does it all the time, or whatever. It's where you lower the hi-hat to snare level and play it with your left hand, leaving your right (strongest) hand to play the kit while playing rudements on the hi-hat. Also, it strenthens your left hand, so, after time, you have two strongest hands....nice.....
But, to play this successfully, you will need an extra ride cymbal on your left, and an X-hi-hat to your right, meaning you can switch hands and stuff.
What do you think? _________________

most drummers that play open style dont use an extra ride, they just move their ride over to the left, i mean if youre playing left handed why would you need a ride on the right side?
also, drummers that do this dont do it for the sake of being able to play both, they do it because its more comfortable. usually drummers pick one or the other. theres no point wasting time learning to do it both ways when you could be learning to do more advanced techniques with one. i think its a waste of time to practice both. _________________ Primary Drum Kit: 1982 Yamaha Recording Customs

I disagree. Working on open-handed playing has dramatically increased my left-hand dexterity and independence. |

forget all the rudiments and ride cymbal stuff, i thought open handed was just playing hi hat with left hand and snare with right anyway??
i think its not a waste of time but i personally wouldnt spend long trying to do it and practicing it, i much rather prefer exercises on the practise pad to try and strengthen my left hand! _________________

Well, personally, it only took around 2 minutes to learn, and about 10 minites to get used to...not trying to seem vain or anything.... Once you've passed that first step, it is suprisingly useful when playing, especially blast beats, it makes your left hand more controlled and can keep up with your right hand.... _________________

I do it from timem to time, but I don't have a ride on my left. I just use use my right hand for the ride and left for the hats. Largely this is done so that I have free access to everything on the kit while keeping time with the other hand. So it's not true open-hand (as the zealots would deem) but it works out pretty well. _________________ So with that title, do I Godwin every thread now?
