Hey, I'm looking into buying a PA for my band, and I've been advised to get an unpowered mixer with powered speakers. I don't really have any brands in mind yet so all I want to know is what I'm going to need apart from mixer and speakers. I want to use it mike drums, amps and vocals for rehearsals and possibly live if we ever put on our own shows. I know I'll need microphones, but I don't know what I'll need in terms of cables and anything else. I have no idea about this stuff so you won't be insulting my intelligence by telling me things that are probably obvious to the rest of you . . .

Thanks,

Thomo

I want to spend somwhere between $2000 - $3000 AUD. I don't have this kind of money yet, I'm just researching at the moment . . .
I was planning on getting 3 500W speakers for monitoring (3 piece band), but someone told me that this probably won't be enough, with everything mic'd up. Any comments on this?

Thanks,

Thomo

i hope you haven't gotten anything yet since i noticed that the last response was in march.

you will get THE BEST bang for the buck if you get unpowered main speakers, unpowered monitors, and a powered mixer.

mains: B-52 MX-1515. it has dual 15" 600 watt Speakers and a tweeter. these are VERY loud speakers with sound quality that rivals Bose. $360 AUD for each cab should be the cheapest. get 2 or 4 of these to put an even number on each side of the stage.

monitors: B-52 MX-MN 15. single 15" 300 watt speaker with tweeter. $240 AUD for each monitor.

powered mixer: Yamaha EMX5014C. you will be able to provide enough power for all speakers and monitors with this. $877 AUD

i own everything it this system except for the monitors, but i've had experince with them. i could not have made a better investment. i dont know what kind of mics you should get tho since i have no experince with them.
