What is the proper way to play blast beats? Do you alternate the hi-hat and snare (HsHsHsHs) with the left and right hands? Also, do you play the bass drum like this (double pedal): RsLsRsLsRsLs? or is it just RsRsRsRs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just joined a metal band and am having trouble maintaning 16th notes on the pedals, my left leg seems to keep 'jolting' and going out of time....maybe all this needs is practice....
