Stick some Moongels on them if they're ringing too much for your taste.

"Overtones"

You either love them or hate them.

I personally LOVE them, i like them especially on my snare.

Either get some moongels as suggested, or get sound rings. Moongels you will find to be more adjustable.

No don't muffle. Tune em out. This is the best way to learn to tune is with overtones and they can be minimized by tuning properly. Make sure you are tuning each lug to the other on the front and bottom of the drums. If you are still getting high overtones then try another head. I used to have the same problems tuning and after years of doing it I have my toms sounding pretty good with few overtones. Also if you are playing shows you want those toms to have that bwaw sound to them. Thats just my opinion. If you really want to get rid of most of the overtones, then take an old head and cut around the edges and make it about a 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Much like cutting around the crust of a pie to take the center out. Make sure this old head is the same size as the head you are applying it to. Also if you really want to kill the overtones you can always get those muffling foam rings made by Remo. They work real good for quite playing situations. I have never personally played with the moon gels, but I do hear that they work really good. Good luck and remember to try your best to tune them first without muffling.

You're problem is stock heads. Put some good heads on there and you'll be happy. If you really completely hate the overtones and ringing, throw on some coated heads, like the coated Evans G2s or Aquarian Response IIs.

those damping rings can help greatly. I am not good at tuning, at all. But i tune my drums, throw the rings on, and they sound amazing and still loud enuf to cut thru music. I run pinstrpes on my toms, and an ambassader on my snare. the snare is not muffled. Just play around with it, and you will get it sooner or later.

I use Weather Striping on mine. you know like you buy at ace hardware. I usually get the 1/2 inch thick kind (usually grey in color) and its sticky on the back side. line it around the edge of the top head. I like it because it doesn't kill the overtones but dampens alot of the ring. plus you can use your discresion on how much you use so you can find just the right sound.

Use tape. If that's not enough, tape a folded napkin to it.

But drums are supposed to ring. Best to get used to it.

Pinstripe heads and a moongel gets the job done.
