I was watching a drum solo video recently, by..(i've forgotten their name, it was a jazz drummer though) and they were using what looked like reversed sticks, but they weren't. They had no taper on either edge, and no tips. I was wondering what the advantages of using this type of stick are, and if they are for sale or just custom sticks. _________________

They are for sale.
They're loud as hell, and they'll wreck your heads.
Very heavy too |

That's strange, becuase the drummer used them as acoustic style sticks, with a lot of multi-stroke rolls. _________________

Did they look very thick, and how were the ends done - slightly rounded? They might have been timbale sticks, something like this perhaps:

Get an idea of how they'll sound, turn a new pair of sticks round, but they will be loud. |

Thats ridiculous! Playing with timbale sticks or the back of regular sticks won't do anything to your heads that the tips of your sticks won't do. Thats like saying that playing with an acorn tip will make your heads break faster than a barrel tip. _________________ The Silvertones |

If you're a hard hitter, you're likely to wear through heads quicker.
If you use heavier drum sticks and hit at the same velocity - you're going to wear your heads out quicker. It's simple physics.
I'm not saying that one session would mess your heads, but if you're using single ply heads, you're likely to get dents. |

But the greater surface area far outweighs the added mass behind the stroke. IF anything playing with larger tipped sticks or the backs of sticks will help prevent damage to heads. They will lose the new head tone quicker because they are being moved more, but their won't be any actual damage to th heads caused by playing with the back of sticks. I'll admit it may also wear coating down more due to the increased striking surface area, but not drastically. _________________ The Silvertones |

theres not really much difference. the ride may not sound as good, because of no tip, but there is no chance of breaking the tip of the stick and i think the sticks may last longer, but may not be as easy to do rolls, but i like to use them on some things on my set

You can get ones called Alien Freaks or something.
The signature stick of Morgan Rose from Sevendust.
Brought out by Vater. Lots of fun.
You might damage your heads, but who cares.
