Has anyone heard of BrandX, or the herminators? I'm looking for a set that has that nice funk fusion sound to it, what materials or brands are signature to this style?

The brand of drums is really rather inconsequential. Often, funk drummers will play smaller-sized drums tuned to the higher end of the spectrum, but brand really doesn't matter.
