I'm thinking of getting a mid range kit for around $2k (w/ hardware but NOT including cymbals).
I love Gretsch... don't want to dish out for USA custom... any thoughts good or bad on the Renown Maple?
Also, I was chatting with a GC drum guy and he mentioned Spaun custom drums... anyone have the low down on these? (They're more expensive than Renown, less than USA Custom). |

| Spaun has a good reputation, but you're right, they're a little more expensive. I have to admit, though, that the Spaun drums I've played haven't exactly blown me away. Probably the right tuning and head combination would have helped. Anyway, the Renown Maples are quite nice. You may also want to look into Mapex Saturns. You can get a nice 7-piece for around $2000. The shells are maple and walnut -- a bit deeper sounding and warmer than all maple. They definitely sound nice. You really can't go wrong with any of these kits, though. |

| I went ahead and bought the Renown Maple Blue Burst floor shell pack... 10R, 12R, 14F, 22K... around $1180 at Guitar Center... I'll post again once I've smacked them around a bit... |

I got this set of Gretsch Renown Maples in 2005. They are:
18 x 18 bass drum
12 x 8 tom
14 x 14 floor tom
14 x 5 snare
They're my main kit...I gig with them 3-7 nites a week and they sound/respond great!
Cool thing is they were under $1500 new. _________________ "When you're finished learning, you're finished."
