I'd get a top of the line snare personally. The confidence a fantastic sounding snare gives you will give you a big boost in your development.

Yeah, if you're happy with your cymbals, get a snare. Even for rock; a lot of sounds can come out of 3 cymbals. A lot of the "scene" drummers only have 3 cymbals.

I would suggest a nice snare, as well. However, have you considered just upgrading the one you have? New snare wires (Puresound, Fat Cat, Canopus, etc.), different heads (what sound are you wanting?), and possibly new hoops (wood, die cast, etc.) can transform a snare drum. It's up to you, but if you go this route, you could use the dollars left over that you would have spent on a new snare and get a new cymbal. Just a thought.

I would go with a good, new snare. You can find them for a good price on ebay. There's a few all maple 9 ply ddrum snares with diecast hoops going for 130 right now.

You just can't really sugarcoat a bad snare. You can dump some money into it and sure it'll sound better, but diecast hoops are pretty finicky about cheeply made drums.

I don't know. If the shell is round and the edges are good, then I don't think there's any reason a less expensive snare couldn't be helped significantly by a few modifications. However, those ddrum snares for $130 sound like a good deal, although I didn't look at them.

Don't get the Joey model for christ sake.

Endorsed models are almost never used by the artist.

Its common knowledge that Chad Smith (Chili's) has a signature Pearl Model, but he never records with it. He uses Brady drums (looks to the heavens)

£200 would get you something good, but i think you're from the states?

Low price, i wouldn't get much by Pearl. I've got a Pearl Masters MMX 14x6.5 Snare and the step up from anything below it is amazing. If you can save and get top of the range, i'd advise it as you really will notice the difference.

I recorded with my old Export EX (2005) snare, and now when i play with my Masters, the difference is just non comparable.

Other brands, well. You'll have to ask our other friends around here as i only really play Pearl/DW/Tama.

Thats an opinion.

I bet if it didn't have "Joey" written on the side, you wouldn't give it a second glance.

Check out the Pork Pie little squealers too. Right in your price range and they sound great.

the jj snare is an amazing snare. not my style at all, and really has no low-end presence, but it's very unique and cracks like a SOB.

even without "Joey Jordison" on the side.

it's all about preference, and if that's the sound he's going for don't put down a perfectly good snare just because "the artist doesn't use it". who cares if he's endorsed to X and records with Y? it's common knowledge that most musicians do that. you go with what sounds best in your current situation.

but this is all besides the point.

if you have a decent snare, upgrade.
if it's a pulse or something along those lines, get a new one.
