I will first say that I don't have a lot of technical knowledge regarding all the parts and components of the drum kit. I'm simply at a point where I "just play" the kit.

However, I am interested in and haven't been able to find information about the "pad" that is inside the snare drum, underneath the batter head. What is this called? What is its purpose?

Thanks!

Like this or something similar?

It's just to help muffle the drum and control the tones. Not all snares have that; mostly the older ones that I know of. You should be able to adjust how much it's touching the head to get different amounts of muffling. I had an old slingerland snare that had it.

Hope that helped some if that's what you are talking about.
