Im going to get a yamaha absolute maple kit in a few months (or years!) and i wanted to know what the best bass drum size would be for me. I want something that's very punchy and Im leaning toward a 20inch, but im afraid that I'll lose that "BOOM" that the bigger diameter has. Im in a classic rock band, but i also really enjoy playing blues and jazz fusion. Any opinions would be great!

For jazz and blues id get a 20in, but since your in a classic rock band, id get a 22in. _________________ "You can be smart and happy or you can be stupid and miserable."

a 20" or 22" bass drum in any depth will be versatile enough to play any style. i would see if you can try out a few variations to see if you can pick out any sound characteristics you prefer. in the end, the heads and tuning you choose will have just as much, if not more of, an effect on the sound of your drum so i wouldnt be overly concerned about sizes. _________________

I've been playing classic rock for 2 and a half years on my fusion Pearl Export.
I've just ordered my Mapex Saturns in rock sizes, because i only really play rock or light metal.
My Pearl Export was a 20", put an Evans Emad 2 and an EQ3 and you'll get a wonderful punch, but you'll still keep a boom. |
