best songs to drum to?

Seems like you're a rock fan. Maybe try some Aerosmith.

Try playing along to to an album you like. Even if you can't play all the songs, practice it slow, keep at it...It'll come. Red Hot Chili Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik was one of the first albums I played to and that took me a while to get down. Im a better drummer for it though.

Pink Floyd - Speak to me/breathe is an awesome track for getting tight and solid slow playing down and learning how to control the speed while doing 2 bar fills and stuff.

Tool - Rosetta Stoned - Nothing more that I can say besides absolute drum genius. Learn how to play this and EVERYTHING about your playing will improve.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Charlie - Great song to get awesome groove to, also very good for improvising funky fills.

Give some hendrix tracks a listen too, as they teach you how to play fast but lightly and also great to groove to..

I`ll try/play anything, but mostly to mix styles, Saga, Zepplin, Alan parsons, Black Crows, Neil Young.
It`s just fun bounceing back and forth, keeps your mind fresh. I`m mostly old-school, some of the new stuff is good, but my chops aren`t. Laughing

Jambi, ive been on that song for a few months, that song is really great all around, and that high hat ghost note thing from 1:15 to 33, crazy.

I like that hat/ghost thing too...very fun to play. I think my favorite part is the snare/tom beat he does from 3:41-3:56, right before the breakdown. I usually go nuts on my kit at that part and I just recently bought an electronic kit which allows me to do all the background stuff he does now.

Which part of Lateralus is troubling you the most? I might be able to help you out. I've taught a couple of students on that song and they seemed to understand it MUCH better when I wrote the song out in 4/4.

Lateralus Tips

FIRST BEAT WITH CRASHES:
Tool loves counting up/down in this song (goes with the whole spiral theme) and they do a counting down timing concept in the first beat. One cycle is 3 measures long and there are 3 cycles before he switches to the tom part.

Technically that first beat is 1 measure of 9/8, then 1 measure of 4/4, then 1 measure of 7/8. 9-8-7. I think most drummers get confused by this when they're learning the song and I think its MUCH easier to look at it as 4/4. When you get to a point where you can play the song comfortably and understand it...THEN go back and look at it as 9, 8, 7 instead of 4/4.

9 + 8 + 7 = 24
There are also 24 8th notes in THREE measures of 4/4...so that's what I mean by looking at it as 4/4.

-First crash is on the 1st beat of the first measure (on the 1).
-Second crash is on the second 8th note of the second measure (on the & of 1).
-Third crash is on the & of 3 of the third measure.
