Mapex VX Series

Hey, i'm thinking of either getting a Mapex M or VX series drum kit, probably VX, as i'll be able to get some decent cymbals with it as well, as it costs much less. But, is it any good, will it last, and will it be sellable in 4 or 5 years time?

I play rock music, and need a new kit for playing small gigs. At the moment I have a (very)budget kit, that just isn't good enough, even with Remo heads it sounds crud.

What are your experiences with VX, and Mapex, is it easy to get replacement/add-on drums/hardware? And, what do you think is the best colour/finish?

I'd get a Mapex M if you can. They're so much better quality in my opinion.

I don't know any massive drum outlets in your area.

I always buy from Only1Music in Cardiff, because the guys there are awesome.

I play rock myself, started out with a Pearl Export EX and have now got Mapex Saturns, with a Pearl Masters MMX Custom Snare.

My personal advice would be to go second hand, and get yourself a Mapex Pro M. That's a high intermediate kit - one of their touring endorser's uses a Pro M.

I spent months planning out the best kit for my circumstances.

If you're only looking at budget to intermediate kit, it's not really worth going new.

I only did as mine is a pro and I intend to keep it for at least 6 or 7 years.

I'd much rather buy new, I think, cos then i'd know its' past, and I can be sure it is exactly what I want. Plus, it would be delivered to me cheaper than a independent seller, and I wouldn't need to pick it up.

Well, it depends what you want really.

You'll get a MUCH better kit if you go second hand, and you also will have a kit that has been played in.

It's up to you really, but if you're upgrading, there's no point in getting a VX because it's not going to be much better than you've got already.

I'm not sitting here and picking holes for the sake of it - i'm trying to ensure you don't throw your money down the pan.

I wish i'd of gone second hand on my first kit, but I didn't. Because of that, i've lost out on about £200 selling it on.

I agree...i bought a second hand Mapex V Series and its a great kit. Im the same, i play lots of different music and gig locally. Suits me down to the ground.As long as your careful about what you buy second hand,its a great of going.

I agree with sfauts in that, why buy a kit if you're not really... upgrading? While the VX might be well made, if you've already been playing for awhile and want to get a new kit, having a top intermediate kit like the Pro M would be nice. If you're short on cash, start on a smaller kit and add more toms later. I have the Pro Ms and I don't see how anyone could be disappointed in them, for the money.

Check out deals like Musiciansfriend scratch and dent sections. Often times, the items themselves are brand new but maybe the packaging is a little damaged. You can actually call them and find out the exact situation of the item and you can have big savings. My brother did that and saved like 10..15% off the price of his guitar for a pefectly fine guitar.
