Hi All,

Midwest Percussion is offering a Sonor Force 3007 Power 5pc Kit w/Hardware and free 10 inch tom for $1299.00 with free shipping. http://www.midwestpercussion.com/drums/acoustic/sonor/index.html

As you may know this is an all Maple kit. Is anybody using this kit and if so how do you like it? Also does the bearing edges have a rolled outer edge or a sharp edge. I believe one of the great things about my Gretsch drums is the rolled bearing edge. This offers a much better contact point between the curve of the head and the edge of the drum. The Sonor may not be quite the drums that the Gretsch Renown’s are but this configuration is exactly what I’m looking for and with hardware to boot. And quite a savings too. OK Sonor people convince me this is a good buy. Question

I think youll find that the rolled bearing edges may provide a fatter, yet less resonant sound that what the 3007's will offer you. Onstage, for me at least, its all about the projection and resonance, because its needed to get over the volume of the other instruments in the bands I play.

One thing is for sure, there will be a noticable difference in playability between the two kits.

Many of the Gretsch kits I have seen also have slightly oversized shells, which means fitting and tuning heads can sometimes be a bit of a hassle. By contrast the Sonor kits have slightly UNDERsized shells, which in my opinion results in a nicer fit and therefore wider tuning range.

I own a 3007 in white sparkle AND a Designer Series kit, and I can tell you first-hand that the Sonor 3007 performs far better than its pricetag would suggest.

Well I guess I will find out about the Gretsch Renown’s because I just ordered a new 6 piece kit. I can tell you my Catalina kit has a rounded edge and they project wonderfully. Musician’s Friend had an unbeatable sale and I picked up the Renown’s along with several Gibraltar hardware pieces for $1580, at savings of $280+ bucks. I do know that Sonor has a great reputation and the 3007’s have received great reviews. Had I not played the Renown kit at Guitar Center I likely would have gone with the 3007’s. The Renown’s just sounded better than any kit in the house that day. Yes well tuned with Evans G2 heads helped.
