Hi, haven`t been here for a while, and seeing as how this forum is for custom kits and other drum companies, I thought I`d share what I`ve been up to, so, here you go, my custom kit 8pc stave maple/walnut, my brand, Shilohrepercussion/FNdrums, started(in my spare time) sept/07, completed Nov/07.
Sizes, dia. x depth, 20x17, 10x7, 12x8, 13x9, 14x12, 15x13, 13x7 zigzag snare(maple/walnut), the other snare is an Ian Paice sig. by pearl.

Very very pretty!
Why do you suspend your cymbals upside-downlike that?
Also, did you make that entirely from scratch or did you buy the shells?

Yes, I made the whole thing myself. I build snare drums mainly, so one day I said, make me a kit, and viola, there it is, was a lot of fun, and I`m extremely happy with the results. I like suspending cymbals were I can, they move more freely.

, I only cut and glue things together. I have a long wood working history, been skin bashing for ever so I put the two together, Shilohrepercussion & FNdrums. Want a drum?, I could make you a 6" tom.

Bish, thanx for the kind words, and a tuorial is a great idea, never thought of doing that before. In the next month or two when I get back at it, I`ll take pictures of ea. step and post with comments. I`ll be doing a couple of snares so I`ll show that, it`s the same for toms basses etc.

Which forum/thread would be the best to do something like that in?

thats soo cool though that you have the talent and ability to be able to make those. man id love to have a drum built, heck thatd be awsome by you but right now i dont have the money to do it and for a custom drum like that itd take a while

VERY nice solid looking construction. Either the kit sounds like thunder when hit hard or it just has a natural dampening effect... which is it?
I would guess thunder...

Do you cut strips of solid wood, angle cut them and strap n glue em together? Kinda like a whisky barrel...
Any hidden screws or biscuits in the construction?

Hey Hunter, thanx, this kit plays as you`d like it, thunderously loud or nice and mellow, these shells along with the head choice resonate beautifully, I have remo pinstripes on top and single ply evans ebony reso`s on the btm.

yup, thats exactly the process I imagined. Looks like you have a good thing going there.
As far as strength, the glue is always stronger than the wood itself, contrary to most beliefs.
Do you saturate the wood in anything to seal it, or just put a finish on it?
I bet if you were to do a test on some soaking in some types of penetrating sealants the finish would be almost bullet proof when it comes to knicks and scratches for heavy use.

keep up the work. If I could still drum, I would really think of ordering a custom kit from you.

No special treatment to the wood, just sealer if laquered, and lots of coats of oil if finished that way.
The oil finish is very easy to reapair as unlike laquer, it doesn`t need to be stripped, feathered, sanded, blended, etc etc, the oil can usually be spot treated with excellant results.
