|
|
Hey everyone who i have not met because i just joined this forum...
I am thinking about updating my drumset (which is currently an old mapex, bottom line or just above bottom line i don't remember).
I have a budget of around $1000 before cymbals and heads (I.E. i'd like to get hardware with the $1000 but i will go over for new cymbals + heads)
i have been looking at the 7-piece pdp x-7, and i haven't read anything but good reviews about it. The Yamaha tour custom also looks nice, though it is $1000 without hardware (also i am assuming it is better than the Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau).
I'm open to other brands of course, but those are the two sets i like the best so far.
is the pdp x-7 a good kit for that price range?
thanks for your time,
--Peter
[edit] I also like the gretsch catalina birch but several reviews i've seen say that the lugs loosen easily :-/
[edit2] I'm not set on a 7 piece set, 5 is fine. 7 would be kind of cool also but i would probably not use that smallest tom. I'm also kind of worried that if i am getting 7 pieces for $850 then they are going to be lower quality than 5 pieces for $800 to $1000

For a $1000, why don't you look at the Mapex Pro-Ms instead of the X7s? The Pro-Ms are all maple shells and are pretty *Holy Censor, Batman* nice - they're what I have. They're intermediate/semi-pro level drums. 5-piece fusion kit is $1050. If you like big drums, then maybe get an M-Birch and you can get the larger sizes for around that $1000 price since the M-Birch are a little cheaper than the Pro-Ms. _________________ AeonScape MySpace Music

Actually i didn't see that Pro M for $1050 with hardware... though i would probably get the fusionease or standard for $100 more because i prefer a floor tom to a cymbal mounted one.
thanks for pointing that out! I might go for those. |

| just my personal oppinion, they usually sell like a 5 piece of the pdp version your looking at, but 2 more drums never hurt, and like i said my opinion, i love the way those pdps sound, probably one of the best drum makers ever, and id take it over the mapex, just because i love the sound of the dw's |

PDP is not the same as DW. You might love DWs and DW might own and run PDP, but the drums are not the same. It's like saying an Epiphone is the same as a Gibson. Epiphones might be nice instruments (they tend to be really nice, really) but it's not the same as a Gibson.
It's really whatever your cup of tea for the Fusionease versus Fusion or whatever. I have the studio, which has hanging toms for both the 14" and 16" toms and while I think floor toms look nicer, I don't think there's much difference in playability. _________________ AeonScape MySpace Music

well, the worst thing about the x-7 in my mind is that it's pdp.
i would take mapex over pdp if i can. |

I've had nothing but good luck with PDP.
I think they're oustanding drums. _________________ "One day I feel I'm on top of the world

anyone know if "interstatemusic *DOT* com" is a reputable dealer? (sorry that i can't post urls yet)
they have some colors that musiciansfriend doesn't (red wood fade namely)
[edit] @styles2281 have you owned one in that price range before? if you have, how was it?
[edit2] also i am looking for a longer bass drum sound (think the opposite of death metal's *smack*smack*smacka*smacka*... more like you'd hear in a techno beat, but not that short) but that is probably more a matter of tuning/head choice right?
i know it's superficial, but i really like the way the x-7 looks... |

My father bought a Pacific LX (maple) in 2000. It was a beautiful sounding kit.
I sold my Yamaha Stage Custom (purchased in 1998) in 2002 to purchase a Pacific Chameleon ($300). I LOVED the chameleon (am Now sorry to have gotten rid of it) though I didn't like the stock snare with it, and replaced it with a PDP 12" snare that I also really liked (for $80 bucks). The chameleon, in particular, for a cheap drumset, sounded great and recorded phenominally. I can't speak much for the hardware, since I immediately replaced it with the Gibraltar hardware and zildjian cymbals.
Unfortunately, with my move, My dad sold his LX to get my chameleon (he liked it too) and I just use my vintage kit now, because both are all either of us can fit in our newer houses.

Yeah, that Red to Black sparkle looks pretty nice. Birch is a nice wood too. _________________ "One day I feel I'm on top of the world

I own a Pacific LX kit. It is nice. I am not a huge fan of the hardware though. I recently replaced my snare with a Mapex Pro M. The hardware is a lot more sturdy.
I kept my old snare fairly tight, and I would have to replace the male and female parts of the lugs often, as they would strip easily.
I have not had any trouble with the lugs on my toms or kick. (probably because they have less tension)
I am considering switching out my drums for Mapex Pro M's alltogether, however. _________________ A groove is a terrible thing to waste! |

umm not trying to sound like an *Horse's Patoot*, but dude exept for the pickups and stuff, epiphone and gibson are close, alot in ways, sounds a little different , but my brother has a sg ep and a les paul gib., just like how the esp and the lsp companys are close too,
and i do know what your getting at but a high priced pdp is as good as a dw in some ways, personally like ive seen people go up from pdp to dw and i liked the pdp personally better,
but thats up to you, but for me, itd be the pdps |
