acrylic drums are a strange beast indeed. they're obviously quite striking visually, but tend to not have quite the same sound as traditional wood shells. acrylics tend to be capable of projecting very well, and can be very loud. the downside is that you tend to lose some of the warmth and character of a wood shell. the shells can also crack if not treated properly, but that could really happen with any instrument.
if you have a chance to try them in person, definitely do so. they very well may your cup of tea. but, if you're looking for a first kit are on a tight budget acrylics may not be the best choice... you may find that the novelty of having big, loud, see-through drums eventually wears off. _________________
