how ever many mics you need
mixer (try and find one with firewire if your computer has it, as USB can only do 2 tracks at a time where firewire can do up to 8 tracks at a time)
cables
software (like pro tools or adobe audition)
a compressor (or you can use the one that comes with the software but it's, in my opinion, a little harder to work with and never sounds quite as good as the real thing)
a pre amp

I think thats about it... I may have forgotten something. hope that helps Very Happy

its basically like an equalizer but it compresses the sound file to make it sound "tighter" and more full. it brings the overtones that are ususally quiet up and the overtones that are ususally loud down and really evens everything out. its part of the mastering process.

i'm at work right now and can't get onto certain sites, so when i get home tonight i'll post a few links for you.

K!, ive just got a bunch of recording gear, and i came under 1200...and its all good stuff, so listen up!

Mics's- the best bang for your buck is samson drum mics, and shure beta SM58 3 pack

Mixer- best bang for your buck here is beheringer xenyx series mixing boards

Computer interface- Use the Behringer U-control, into your USB

Software- if you got garage band, use that. but a good program to use on computer is called Gold Wave, its got some effects, and processors on it that makes it a good cheap way to record.

Isolation for amps.....i used my bass drum soft case over my friends amp. for bass amps, get the sound you want outa the speaker, then use the slave send in the back, and plug that into your mixer, then unplug the speaker from the amp (alot of amps can do that easily) then hook up a headphone amp and give headphones to your buddies and THERE YOU GO!

Hey guys, still stuck in the process of sorting out recordings

I got a few basic things such as a mixer and mics.

But now i need a mixer with more inputs =[

I was at a mates house doing some recordings and his mics set up gave such a nice sound.

all drums were miced up "snare(bottom and top) ,two rack, one floor and bass drum.

also had 3 overheads round the kit and wait for this.......an extra 5 condensers round the room.

So this is what i want ...not the exact amounts but you get the picture.

Anyone recomend some decent ish mics to get without breaking the bank for:
Snare
Toms
Bass Drum
Overheads
Room mics

cheers:)
