really embarrassing Metranome question..

I feel extremely embarassed asking this because i should know this for how long im playing. but when your trying to see how fast ur BPM is how do u use the metranome. Like let me put out a scenario. If I start my double bass with my right foot, should I try to make the right foot be on every click on the metranome or is it right and left foot is supposed to be on the click?

it matters what your doing, usually the loud clicks are the 1/4 notes, and if you have a high priced metronome, the quieter clicks are the 8 notes and the most quiet are the 16 notes.
if you have a normal click the clicks are just quarter notes so every other right foot hits with the click, if your acting as if there eighths then every right foot should hit, and if your acting the clikcs as 16s then every hit should match the click.

Do you understand musical notation? It all depends, and there are similarities when it comes to describing speed for example, with a single stroke roll.
So to describe a common 'goal'/'standard' that I've heard, figure that you should be able to play continuously at a fast 200bpm.

If you understand notation, then really I'd say the metronome at that speed represents 8th notes, so play along some 32nd notes with it. Otherwise play 4 times as fast, or to be really layman about it, play with one hand at twice the speed of the metronome and then match the other with it.

I think the speed competitions may just state the speed of each individual notes. ie I've heard that it's around 1,3XXbpm now. So my max would be around 8 or 9 hundred, and that's plenty good for me for now.

Oh so my post above is referencing how to describe how fast you are playing...it says nothing about the fact that you should use the metronome for more than just that. Use it to help out your timing, set it to a speed that fits songs you play and play along with it, etc. It will help a lot. Do rudiments etc on it.
