Hey, I'm dropping in to say hi. And I kind of need some advice I'm a noobie.
First off: This Christmas I'm probably buying a drum kit, I'm going to buy it with my own money and I'm 14, so my range is anywhere between $150-$400 and I need a decent beginner kit that will be able to last me a long time. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

First off welcome!
My advice is to look on craigslist, buy a cheap kit to start. Get a full size one, but cheaper the better. The only thing you will have to deduce is whether or not the hardware could literally fall apart when you play it.
Buy sticks NOW if you don't have them, and start learning! It'll make things easier (so I've heard ).
Why don't you tell us a bit more about your musical background? _________________ free and easy |

I don't have much, in all honesty. I played trumpet for maybe a year in like 6th grade but I'm okay at Rock Band. But I've always wanted a drum set... Right now I'm in choir which kind of sucks because I only recently found out my mom was actually okay with me getting a drum set (everytime I asked her previously she said no).
Not too colorful and not too much, but it's there, haha. |

Well like I said - nothing to stop you from starting now before you have a kit. I also strongly recommend a cheap used kit. Save your money. A NICE kit with good cymbals will steer you towards a thousand dollars (less used), so until you have that money don't waste a few more hundred dollars on a new rather than usedbeater kit...
Get STICKS and search around for online lessons - vicfirth.com, drumbum.com, google em. LISTEN closely to the drumming in songs and perhaps try to duplicate some of what you hear, or play along. If you ever think you're good, head over to drummerworld.com and realize how non-pro you are... _________________ free and easy |

The advice of picking up used is solid. Check on craigslist in your area and you are likely to find something decent if you are patient. _________________ We don't stop playing because we get old,
