Hey everyone...
My name is Chris, I just joined here tonight, and while the drums aren't my primary instrument (I play guitar) I used to play drums way back when I was a kid (though I wasn't really that good at it at the time, and tympani drums were what I really wanted to play). I joined basically because I have some questions about if there are any affordable alternatives to an actual tympani drum. I can not only not afford it, it cannot fit in my room. I've heard about people trying to emulate the sound of a tympani on a floor tom or a roto tom, but again, money is an issue, and when I tried playing a floor tom with tympani mallets at Guitar Center, it didn't produce the type of sound I wanted it to. Can it be done with roto toms, like 14" or larger? I know that they are more affordable, but can the sound of a tympani be reasonably reproduced with a 14" roto tom? I know that you tune one simply by moving the head of the drum itself, but can it be done at all? Is it even ideal for learning tympani in general? I'm just wondering, because I have wanted to play one for years. |
