i have a theory. snares are to a drummer, as pedals are to a guitar player......we all want different sounds for each different style or genre we like to play. i myself have 4 snares now. network mahogany snare(its cheap, but its got a good sound), my maple 14x4 sonor snare, my new mike portnoy melody master, and then my chad smith sig snare.

out of all of those, i find none of them really have the EXACT sound i want. so now i raise my question........what is the most insane sounding snare drum you have ever heard?

for me, its gotta be the snare off of Poison's album "crack a smile and more" my sonor snare has a similar sound, but not as focused. so for me, that is my ultimate snare sound.

so what about everyone else?

that sucks all that money on snares, id try to mess with your tuning, ive been able to find the perfect spot in all three, my old ludwig shell i restored, the pacific one i got for $30 and the one that has the PERFECT is definiatly my snare i built, greatest snare ive ever heard and played.

the steve gadds pretty close http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbsVsfiOVyM
dw ones up there pretty close to my snare (mix of the gadd and that one get you my snare) o and a mix of the second to last one there
i think the Revs snare is probably the coolest snare out there thats on a major label.

but cant forget the St. anger snare that was beast:)

Not the definitive greatest drum sound ever but lately I have been digging the drummer from WITCH a lot. Check out their self titled album or they just came out with a new one called paralyzed. Kind of stoner/sabbath rock riff metal stuff, the drum sound is amazing.
