Here's a fun lil question that everyone should be able to answer:
What's in your stickbag? |

| ProMark 747 nylon tips (I buy them by the box!) and a nice pair of Vic Firth steel brushes! I love playing with the brushes because it's such a completely different style and sound from the straight forward rock I normally play. Makes for a nice change! |

I just have one pair as I didn't know anything at all about drums or sticks when I bought the drum kit 4 weeks ago.
The kit came with a pair of sticks but i turned them down because I felt they were too light and insisted on picking my own. I opted for a medium weight instead. They are wooden tips. I feel pretty comfortable with them for learning and will experiment with others later. |

LOL Sticks don't last long with me. A week or two of practices (twice a week for a couple of hours per) or two nights in a club (4- 45 minute sets per night) and they begin to splinter and lose their rigidity. I usually chuck'em in the trash before they break so I don't loose an eye or something! I rim shot constantly and edge my cymbals pretty hard. I play pretty hard too...well cuz we play rock! Very physical! I love it! I wish ProMark would give an endorsement! It would save me A LOT of money! Rock on!

Hey, LouderDB, ever play Zildjian sticks?
Most people complain about brands not lasting long enough, but I complain about the Zildjian sticks lasting too long! I had pair of 7A's from them ("pencil sticks") which lasted (and I kid you not) 4 months. During this time, they were subjected to jazz, death metal, punk, latin, just about everything, really, and they didn't break!
In fact, towards the end, their beads were completely worn away and the shafts still in tact!
I'd save the gigged sticks for home practice. And don't worry bout getting blinded; they usually fall behind you or go flying at the guitarist. (not a bad deal, eh?) |

Right now, I'm using Promark 717 (Rick Latham Groove Stick) for my sticks. I've found that they're just the right weight so that I can cover all the bases and not worry bout them breaking in a second. Light enough for jazz, heavy enough not to die after three minutes of playing metal.
I've been playing Calato brushes almost exclusively, and in fact, have had one pair for around 4 years. (I really need to get a new pair, though!)
In addition, I have a pair of Calato timbale/multi-percussion sticks, Promark hot rods, Zildjian cymbal Mallets, a pair of generic plastic sticks, a pair of Ludwig hickory 2b's (my first pair of sticks!, a worn pair of Dave Weckl signature sticks (Vic Firth), and a horde of other random sticks. |

I haven't tried the Zildjians but if I can find a pair that feel like the 747's, I'll get a pair. I use to buy the Regal Tip Quantum 2000. They last a long time too but the nylon tips pop off pretty often. But like you say about the Zildjians, I could cut the Regal Tips down to half their original diameter and they STILL wouldn't break! I just fell in love with the feel of the 747's They're a little longer and give me a better reach. They just fit my hand really well. Not the best stick for a lot of music styles cuz they're so heavy. It's tuff to play soft with them! That's why I have the brushes. But I'll try the Zildjians .... Thanks bro!

Vic Firth 5A Nylon tipped sticks. They are light enough to fly around the kit, but beefy enough not to break every 3 seconds like the 7A's I used to play. The new Vic Firth nylon tips are much improved (old ones tend to fly off). And IF they do break, there's a barrel-type wood tip under the nylon that sounds pretty good (very dark sound).
Regal Tip brushes are great, too. |

I played Zildjians for years (which incidentally are made by another company and then labeled). More recently I played Vic Firths and favored the 5As for a lot of things. Currently I have been testing a stick from (a manufacturer) that I will almost certainly be using and possibly endorsing. The dimensions are very close to a 5A but not exactly (you can read a little teaser about it on my site). These sticks last, and play better than anything (at least for my tastes). When I can, I'll let you know more details and who the manufacturer is.

On this subject, and speaking of endorsments, do any of you remember "Bully Sticks" from the late 70's and early 80's. They were made by the Pokallus Stick Company. I'm not sure if they're in business any longer but thought I'd ask! Rock on!

of all the sticks i have had, pro-mark seem to last the shortest. if they don't just snap in 2, they will splinter and cut the heeck out of your hands. i prefer zildjian, vater, and vic firth. if you want to wail on your drums then you can always just get the "ahead" aluminum sticks and they last a long time but they are a lot different then regular wood sticks. |

| Zildijan 3a's...Beefy stick, I love it. I haven't broke at all, I just chuck them because the bead always breaks before the stick. |
