Well I used to have and old crappy drumset, I think it was a CB 100 or something but that's not important. After abusing it as a noob drummer for several years, I broke a lug (I think that's the term, it holds the tension rods from the rime to the drum) off one of the toms, and since the set was generally starting to get messed up I went out and bought a Pearl Export Select as a replacement. This kit has served me pretty well for a long time and recently I had to get some new heads for it.
I put on pinstripes across the toms and bass drum. When I was doing this, I accidently destroyed the resonant head on my bass drum, and I was a little bummed, but once I got the tension on the batter head (the only head) and started thumping on it I realized that I had a subwoofer on my drumset. I quickly added a small blanket to dampen it, well after recording a couple ridiculous hip-hop beats from it. I was getting a really dirty sound from it, but I didn't want to go out to the store again to buy new heads.
All of the sudden it struck me, take your old CB bass drum and line it's batter side up with the resonant side of the Pearl bass drum. It took some creative padding under the drum and careful adjustments of the legs of the drum, but I finally got them lined up parallel with maybe 1/32 of an inch between the two so they wouldn't bash into each other when I am banging on them.
At this point I basically have a 22"x44" bass in two pieces with both heads having about 3" of dampening across the bottom quarter of them. I start playing some bass rolls and it sound phenominal. It gets a throaty fast attack but the small amount of resonance gives a really really bassy end to it. I don't know if anyone else has ever tried this or what, but I would just like to let you guys know of an odd technique that I think I'm gonna stick with for a while.
So... What does everybody think??? Think it will sound good miced???
