When I bought my kit the guy said he could get me another matching bass for 175 bucks, but seeing as the double pedal Im looking at cost 180 bucks I dont know what I should get
Space isnt really a big problem for me, I think I have plenty of room for another bass plus If I run out of room their is an empty room down the hallway that I could use for my drums the only problem is that room is nothing but windows
So whats better |

Neither is better. Both have their pros and cons, it's really just personal preference.
I would go with a double pedal because 1) space is an issue for me, 2) I don't play enough double bass to justify a second kick, 3) I play a 5 piece - a 3 toms, 2 kicks setup would look weird, IMO, 4) less tuning issues and 5) despite what many think, a double pedal can be just as fast and smooth as two seperate pedals if it's setup correctly.
BUT double bass kits do look d*mn cool, I have to admit that. _________________ "If I didn't make a living beating things with a stick, I'd probably be in a lot of trouble!" - Alex Van Halen |

depends, what kind of kit do you have?
If you have crappy beginners kit, just buy the pedal, because if you upgrade, you wont have to buy another pedal or another double bass. _________________

trust me, that might be the kit you want now, but in 2 years you might have totally changed you mind... the v series is still nothing to scoff at, but it is mapex's bottom of the line.
it's a cool looking kit, but i reckon i'd go with the double pedal for now. if you do gigs in the future, it'll be alot easier to lug around a double pedal than another bass drum, and there's less maintenence and costs involved with a pedal, not to mention hassels with tuning
ultimatley though, it is up toy you _________________ I hate you, Milkman Dan. |

Well id really rather have another bass than a pedal, mostly because of the way it looks but also because if I buy a double pedal I will probobly end up having to purchase a 2 leg hi hat stand as well and thats gonna cost an extra 100 bucks or so.
Thanks for the tip on that mapex kit, I had no Idea it was on the lower end of mapex's quality. Im hoping that my next kit will be one that will last at least 5-10 years so I dont want another lower quality kit.
As far as gigs go I dont think I will have any anytime soon since I have no band but even If i was in a band I would be the guitarist, I prefer playing guitar over playing drums plus Im like WAY better on guitar than on drums. |

First of all drum lessons have nothing to do with what I was asking.
But anyways I want to learn as much as I can on my own, that way when I do get lessons I will spend more time actually being taught how to play instead of wasting the instructors time explaning what simple terms mean of which I could have found the meaning of in any book or on the internet.
Plus It would do no good for me to take 5 1 hour long lessons right now because I would have to wait about 3 moths before I could afford the next 5. |

Bad idea for a few reasons. When you try to learn things yourself, sometimes its not always the right way, so when you do get a teacher and try to be ahead of the game, it may actually put you back. If you learned bad habits over the course of your self-teaching, then it'll take longer to undo those habits and teach it the right way, then just the right way the first time _________________

True but not in all cases.
Still though I dont want to have my lessons spread 3 months appart For one thing the man that does them would probobly not care to much for that, so Im gonna wait a few months so I can get a job and pay for them myself that way they wont be spread 3 months appart.
As far as bad habits go If I wait 3 months between lessons I will probobly devolope bad habits anyway. So either way im screwed
My only options are:
a. save my money for 3 months pay for the 5 lessons and then save my money for another 3 months to pay for the next 5
b wait till I can get a job so they wont be all spread out, which will be in like 6 months
either way Im screwed, If I do a I will have to wait 3 months to start them but will also have to wait 3 months in between and if I do b I will have to wait 6 months to start them but they will be one after another. |

dude honistly, from how you have representid yourself, it seems like you have some major kinks to work out... Your stick should not slide down the drums, you should know how to read music (you might know, but you were talking about the metranome and it dident seem like you really understood note values) Even if you take those 5 lessons and all you learn is how to hold your sticks and how to read, it will be worth it... you just need a push in the right direction.
Hell get some technique videos or something, but getting caught up in what your playing on, insted of how you play it is no good.

I know what your saying about having some kinks to work out but I have fixed most of them, I fully understand reading sheet music and note values and such (that was the first thing I learnt); My sticks arent slipping around any more (I think it was the cheap heads that was on my kit since I replaced them I have had no problems); I now know how to use a metronome; And I have gotten a lot better on my single pedal but I still cant play 16th notes on it well I can play them but very slowly because when i try to go fast I get out of rythm with the ride.
Ive got 2 dvds on playing drums (got em from my uncle) and have fully watched each one of them and have learnt all the patterns and such that was in them although they werent very detailed they did show how to properly hold the sticks and how to set up the drums and such.
Ill be going to the music store sometime next week to buy some cymbal cleaner and if the man that does the lessons is thier im going to see for shure how much it is and how many its for (my uncle told me about teh lessons and sometimes he isnt that reliable) Its possible my parents would help pay for the lessoons but I dont know.
I know what you mean about not getting caught up in what your playing on because when I started playing guitar I had a $100 squier strat and a $79 amp but When I got my 2nd guitar (which was much better quality) I saw that I played just as good on the beat up pos squier. I now have 10 guitars and play just as good on the squier as on my $600 Gibson. |
