Ok, so a guy has a 5 piece drum kit, with basic sizes of toms, a normal snare and a bass drum. Cymbals wise, he plays Hi Hats, an 16" crash and a 20" ride.

Any recommendations for expansions or additions to his kit, either to the actual drums or cymbals? The guy plays metal music and wants to expand his improvising options and scope for making up new drum rhythms, and of course the potential to show-off is also increased Very Happy

Any suggestions of extras for his kit?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Do you feel you creativity is being strangled by your current set up? Some things to consider; how much money do you have to spend, and what do you think you would want more at this point, cymbals or drums. You may want to add another floor tom or another snare, maybe a dbl pedal, but I think you should add some more cymbals, i.e another crash, a splash, and if you have the money, a china. Let us know what you decide.

Octobans

Yesss! Excellent suggestion! I'm thinking of getting me some octobans myself.

Also, a second snare drum is always a good thing to have around. A 10", 12" or a piccolo snare just for FX's, it's a blast.

...and of course, one can NEVER have too many splashes! Very Happy

Listen to the beginning of Pink Floyd's Time, those are Octobans. Portnoy uses them a lot also. 8 - 6" heads , different lenth tube like drums , tuned to different notes.

If this link works you can go here and play Portnoys kit and hear how they sound.

Yeah, I can't understand not liking splashes. They sound good, and aren't expensive. Heck, a splash is just a drop in the bucket.

Splashes are cheap and small. Everybody should have at least 3 or 4... plus 3 jam blocks, very very minimum 2 cow bells, misc wood blocks, etc, etc, etc...

I forgot who said it when I ask about those Tama mini timps, but the term was "crap to bang on" or something like that. You decide if it's a good or bad thing.

Being lose and relaxed is good while playing but totally plastered and falling off your throne isn't.

Oh, you mean to bang on. I gotcha... maybe you didn't mean that.

I have such a set too(those two cymbals,a snare,a bass and 3 toms) and in the future I'm expanding too.Plus,I don't have so much money so I'm going for a somewhat cheap solution...So here's what I'm going to do for mine..-it should help you

1)Paiste 502 China (I have heard that they rule, and they are in a low price too) (OR Wuhan 14" China (..don't know...))
2)Some 12" Splash (again,Paiste 502-I'm a fan)
3)Maybe a floor or a tom tom (Pearl?)
4)Definetely another pedal (An Iron Cobra double maybe...)

So,that about wraps it up..Cost around 1100 Euros(~Dollars). If I ever get to have them...Or i can also buy the parts separetly in a matter of..well years Razz
