I have been strugling with fast single stroke rolls because my left hand simply can not move as fast and fluid as my right so what I have been doing is playing this simple rock beat for about 5 minutes at a time using my left hand on the hi-hat and my right on the snare.

Code:

H|-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x|
S|-----o-------o--|
B|-o-------o------|

It has really helped my become more accurate, fast, and fluid with my left hand, try it and see if it works for you as well.

Om may 3rd I saw Dennis Chambers in clinic. I had no idea who he was. He has lightning fast hand speed. When asked how he developed it, he said he would pratice on a pillow with telephone books under his arms. He said because there is no bounce off the pillow ,and because holding the phone books under your arms forces you to just use your wrists instead of your entire arm, you develope the muscles in your wrists and speed as well.

I have the same problem. My left hand isn't as fast or as powerful as my right. So what I do is play using traditional sticking and practice rudements like that. It's slowly developing.

Yeah, no secrets with me either...just practice rolls and rudiments starting with your left hand.

Premier, I have discussed this over and over with people in this board. They swear that it will cause carpal-tunnel syndrom, or it doesn't work, or it screws up your sticking technique on the drumset. But my answer to them always is: It has worked for me, and it's STILL working for me. When I heard him explain it, he never mentioned the phonebooks. He said playing on pillows period will help your single stroke speed. So I adopted it and do it once or twice a week. It helps build and keep muscles in your forearm/wrist area in shape.
