Well, I went by guitar center today on my way out of Austin (had to move back to my parent's for the summer) to pick up a new head for my snare as my old Remo powerstroke 3 had absolutely no coating left in a circle of 1" radius in the center. I must admit I'm not a Remo fan, but back in my parents town where I bought the head, that's all they had.

Anyhoo, I went in to get the Aquarian studio-x since, well, bytor's rather persuasive, but they were out. Being an Evans guy, I grabbed the dry, eq ring genera head. I just put it on, tuned it, blowdried, etc, and it sounds like I've got a completely new snare.

I love it when cool things like this happen.

Of course it's no surprise that they were out of Aquarians. They're so freakin' awesome that places just can't keep them in stock! Very Happy

Heh, just having a little fun. The head you ended up with is a very nice head, as well. It's definitely one of my favorites from Evans. It's a lot like the Aquarian Focus-X, of which my new one should be arriving in the mail any day now. Cool

Congrats on the new sound you're getting. I love dry heads on snares...

Yeah, I would have liked to wait until the weekend, but nooo my silly parents needed a second honeymoon and need me to watch the house.

Then again, I'm there often enough we've probably crossed paths as it is.

Ah. GC was just down the road from my old apartments so whenver I had time to kill, or homework to ignore I'd pop down there and try out things in hoping that one day this education on which I'm spending all my money will allow me to afford some of what's there.

But, yeah, if you ever recall seeing a tiny, "looks-too-irish-to-be-true" guy with long red hair up in a bun-like thing and a beard, well, that'd be me.

I just replaced my snare head with the same head as you, my remo powerstroke 3 was getting pretty ragged so I went and picked up the evans head. I wanted to try an aquarian but the local stores only sell remo, evans, and yamaha.

The local stores here are murder, I paid 18 bucks (after tax) for 1 head and the worst thing was it was on sale, I think it was like 19.99 regular price.

I guess it was worth the price though, it blows my old head out of the water, Something weird that I noticed was this head seems to have eliminated nearly all of the sympathetic snare buzzing. I was so used to the snares buzz that the first time I hit my bass I thought the snares were disingaged, but come to find out it was just the new head.

By the way, im going to be in Austin again this weekend, maybe ill see you at Guitar Center.

EDIT- Change of plans, were going to austin next weekend.

What are each companies "dry" snare heads? I'm looking into one, because I'm sick of my super wet sounding snare.

An Aquarian Satin Finish Coated head is what I use on my snare, in combination with an Evans 303 snare side works well for me. I get a nice dry snare sound, and a good crack.

The Aquarian Focus-X is a dry head. It has a vented ring on the underside and has a great sound to it.

Im liking the studio X snare head I got when i replaced my heads... but I really liked the coated/vented Evans EQ i had a few years back, that thing sounded awsome.

It took alot of tuning and beating on this Studio head to get it where I wanted it. Im hoping to get a wooden snare soon though, i willkeep the metal one around for live shows incase I dont like how the snare sounds.. or if Im playing unmiced at a show.
