When incorporating Polyrythm's in fills is there a correct way to start the fill? I mean like with RH or LH first? Does it really matter?

Look, polyrhythm just means "many rhythms", so it's important that we have a musical concept going on first. Pete Magadini explains in his books how it's possible to make literally any two numbers into a "polyrhythm". Try having a musical purpose or melodic idea to what you're doing FIRST... then find the music that fits around it. Sometimes when I'm soloing, I'm going to hear something in terms of an eight bar musical phrase with discernable melodic content. If at some point I start accentuating the dotted quarter note, say in the third bar... I know how it's going to work out instinctivley, because maybe I've worked on the "feeling" of dotted quarter notes enough so that my body just finds the way through... I don't know if I'm explaining this that well....

Never ever rely on counting. Never (except maybe when reading). You should be able to feel everything you play, "polyrhythms" and all. Also, don't just try to play some weird rhythm for the sake of playing it. Make sure what you are doing is appropriate for what's happening at that particular moment. Check out Vinnie Colaiuta. He plays some really tricky stuff but he makes it sound easy, like it was written in the music. Don't get caught up in the game of technique for the sake of technique. Check out some West African and Cuban music. "Polyrhythms" are just a regular thing in those musics, unlike most modern American music that you're likely to hear.

You can't think 2 dimentionally on this. The only right way is if you do the polyrhythm correctly. LH, RH, LF, RF, it doesn't matter. Heck, I could do a polyrhythm with my left hand and right foot.

BTW - nice avatar. Now go change it. Very Happy

Rusty, I assume you mean, in the context of playing a song, with other people, not to rely on counting, right? I think that counting is very, very important in practice (on your own), especially when you can slow the tempo down really far to get a better grasp of what you're playing. If you could clarify what you mean, that would be great.

Sorry, that's pretty much what I meant. You might need to count some stuff out when you're working on it but I wouldn't try it for real until you can play it by feel.
