What style of music you play, do you play single, or double bass and why?
I play 70's, 80's and 90's covers Mostly Alternative with new Millenium Stuff.
I play single pedal, but thinking about going double.
I could always improve on a Single thats why I never really wanted to play a double. Razz

I play everything from straight-edge hardcore to acid jazz and funk.

I honestly think double-pedal is cheesy, but that's my own personal opinion because I do believe that 99% of what MOST DB drummers do can be done with a single pedal with some practice on single technique.

Straight 32's at 250bpm is just not my thing - even though I am a huge metal/hardcore fan - I just think the music sounds better with more syncopation/funk style beats and less 2/4 rock'n'roll beats mixed with straight 16's or 32's on the BD.

That's why I like neohardcore (not punk) examples - Snapcase, Allthatremains, Atreyu, John Dillenger, Converge, etc etc) ie metal music with a little bit more creativity in the percussion dept.

I'm not baggin on DB - it's just not for me, I much more prefer the dynamics of the hi-hat than straight thuds on the bass drum.

gosh...when i'm giggin, i'll play blues, jazz, funk, rock, bebop (elvis-type sh*t), latin, swing.....any and everything they throw at me at a bar or club.

as far as drum pedals, i play both single and double. i prefer double when play rock or dave matthews stuff. singles fine for everything else.

i'm currently in a "metal-core" band. double kick is the main focus with our style of music. when i'm messin around i try to improve each foot individually, but over all i would recommend double kick....but that's probably just the metal in me talking.[/b]

I play Progressive rock, Rush, Dream Theater type stuff. As well as Metal, Opeth , Nevermore, In Flames, King Diamond along those lines. I also do some Original stuff with friends that is kinda Frank Zappa ish lot's of odd time.

I play Double bass. Why? Because you can do twice as much with 2 feet then you can with one. I don't care what anyone says, there isn't a drummer on the planet Earth that can do with one foot , what a good double bass drummer can do with 2 feet. You've got 2 legs man use em.

I primarily am a Funk and Rock drummer but am playing in a punk band right now ( I hate it but it keeps my single stroke speeds up)

As far as the single vs double bass thing... I think a person is a little naive if they think they can do anything with a single that can be done with a double.

Try using only one hand to play your hi-hat for the rest of your life....will it force you to improve your speed and dominance in that hand?...yes
will it limit your playing and musicality...yes

This idea that having less will limit your musicality in some way is bizzare and absurd.

My point is that Tony Williams or Max Roach wouldn't have done anything more musicial if they'd had 20 cymbals, 15 bass drum pedals and 12 snare drums. I believe it is important for one to learn to do more with less, or else it ends up sounding like the other way around. I don't think it indicates a heightened musical awareness to play more drums at all. The best drummers, the most musical drummers, are the ones that make whatever they have sound musical. I once saw a 75 year old drummer make music with a hi hat and a pair of brushes. Very profound, deeply swinging music. There was a level of intimacy with that kind of simplicity that would not have existed had he been on a full kit.

I understand your point and maybe I shouldnt have worded my response in that way. I wasnt talking about "needing" to have 2 bass pedals to play musically. I was actually reffering to the comment of being able to do anything you can do with 2 pedals with one. That simply is not the case.

You are correct I should not have used the phrase "musicality" in my statement as I was not trying to belittle any single pedal drummers talent or musicianship.

99% of what I play is punk. I love the speed and difficulty of it. I play single pedal...but I would really like to learn double. I don't think I'd ever use it in one of my songs...but I would just like to know how to... I REALLY REALLY love the sound of playing triplets on the double bass, and playing a rock beat...it sounds great to me...

Welcome back Andy-Flag!!! Missing In Action.

I can play anything mostly, I'm starting in on latin stuff but still a beginner to it.

My favorite stuff to play is fusion. I love to play any style though, it just has to be fun to play Cool .
