Not only did Buddy Rich say that, he also shamed them when he would play with supersonic speeds in midair clicking his sticks. Spins are neat, but they truly mean nothing. Being able to play paradiddlediddles at that same breakneck speed, in midair, with nothing but sticks, can really grabs an audiences attention.

blackwell and lang seem to enjoy spinning their sticks alot. itīs cool to watch. Iīd rather spend time on my groove, though.
like buddy rich said; people that lack techniqe and feel, uses stick twirls and other nonsense to cover up what they canīt express musicaly. true, but best of both worlds wouldnīt hurt Smile

That isn't exactly one of Buddy's more brilliant comments. AMA, I don't think stick twirling means nothing. It obviously means that you've got the skill to twirl the freakin stick in an already-difficult manuever. He would do that paradiddle stick trick in mid air but I disagree that it shames stick twirlers. It was great move, but stick twirling is badass and it takes alot of time to get your twirls to at least adiquate.

I gotta agree with doublestrokeroll, those things take a lot of time, and effort to learn to a decent level, it took me a week of constant effort to get one of the basic ones to a decent level where I would show it to people, the others I still aren't too good on. They are useful too, as they build up the muescles in your fingers, they don't look like massive muscly things but it does have an effect when your using your sticks, doing it a lot improves strength and ability with your fingers.
