I think what may be confusing some of you about mahogany is that there is actually two different kinds of mahogany on the market! Some of the lower end or entry level kits use Mahogany also known as "Luan" (pronounced loo-AHN) from the Philippeans. This type of mahogany has a more open grain and is not considered to be a high grade wood. A great deal of paneling for homes is made from this wood. African mahogany is much harder than Luan. The grain is tight and beautiful when finished properly. It's also less available, harder to work with and there for more expensive. The higher end kits are made using this type of Mahogany. Google those woods to find out more. But the fact is just because it says Mahogany doesn't mean it's a good or bad kit. It depends on what type of Mahogany it's made from!

I thought the main factor in lower end drums were the fabrication/forming process/quality of the shells rather than the specific wood. Is this true?

I know generally mahogany isn't considered good acoustic wood, but I'm just curious as to what the Pearl Masters Mahogany Classic kits from 2002 sounded like. I know they were gorgeous, and Pearl introduced them as the "only professional mahogany drums in the world today." Any thoughts?
