I was looking for a 18 inch floor tom on ebay and ran across vintage Ludwig Vistalite. Are these things really that loud and that great to be worth $400 or more? The light blue really looks nice.

Yeah they look cool. And yes they are quite loud. Although that particular one looks in excellent shape, I wouldn't pay $400 for it. I've seen some with some scratches(alot of old vistalites have a couple scratches) go from $125 and up. Blue and clear are not as rare as other colors(such as red, yellow, green) so they are usually a little cheaper than the rarer colors.

the old vistalites (and maybe the new ones) never could hold their tune well. I would definitely avoid the vintage ones and certainly would check to see if this problem still exists with the new ones.

Thanks. Actually my objective now is just to get something a little louder for a floor tom. They look so darn cool too.

I play on a 70's Vistalite set and I love it. My band mates and other people are always telling me that my set sounds better and louder than any drumset they've heard. I use it for Rock, Jazz, Metal, really anything. They are definatelly louder and work really good in live applications. I throw a coated head on the snare, 2 ply heads on the toms, and now a powerstroke 3 on the bass. I haven't even had to mike the snare yet!!

B...

you can still buy acrylic shells if you wanted to build a kit....you could easily do just a floor for less than 400 bucks

My teacher has a black acrhylic on too. Its louder then the small pearl jazz kit that I play on when im there, but its really old and dout of tune, BIG as well for a 2 piece, Its big, a nice 18" floor tom, now that baby is loud. Im sure that blue one sounds great though.

Update:

I have an 18" floor tom now as of last weekend. $50 from a friend of a friend of a friend etc. The depth is 16" but I'm not sure. A few minor scratches and the crome needs some polish but no cracks or anything major. It's clear (no color tinting) and has some old crappy, no lable, single ply I think) on top. Real loud but sounds pretty awful with that head. David suggested an Evans Hydrolic on top to get it under control so I'm going with that.

I already have 14" and 16" mount toms on the right so I'm not sure where I'm going to put it. The joys of expensive Lego... I mean drum kits.

Thats fantastic! Congrats! It'll sound killer!
I have a double bass drum Clear Vistalite Kit.
2 x 22" Bass drums
12", 13" and 14" rack toms
16" and 18" floor toms

I love it! Once you get the right heads on it, tune it up, it'll sound like a dream. You'll find yourself looking for excuses to hit it!

you could put the 14" to your left. then have the 16 and 18 to your right.
