| Hey guys I decided im not looking for heads that are TOO pingy on my toms but I dont want anything dull like my old Aquarian Performance ll. The heads at the studio I go to are Pinstripes and I like the sound they give the toms. I really like the look of ebony heads but I dont know how they sound. I was looking at the Remo Ebony Ambassador heads and they got some really good reviews. What do you guys think? Im looking for something not too pingy and not too dull. My toms are 10 12 and 14. Thanks. |

As far as I know the only difference between the ebony heads and clear heads is the color.
I currently have pinstripes on my toms and I am pretty satisfied with them, not too pingy not to dull, You might get 1 tom head and try it on your tom, that way if you dont like the way the pinstripes sound you will only be out the 10 bucks or so it cost rather than 50 for a whole set. _________________ Sometimes rude, sometimes nice - say something I dislike and pay the price |

| For years I played nothing but Remo Ebony Pinstripe batter heads and Ebony Ambassador reso's. Ambassadors as batter heads would be to ringy for me, but you may like that! It's a great sounding combination and great looking as well. There is SOME difference in the sound from Ebony series heads to their clear counterparts. But not a great deal. The black pigment in the Mylar film does have some dampening effect. But again, it's not a whole lot! If you want black drum heads, I know of no other manufacture than Remo. However, I stopped using Remo last year when I started trying other manufacturers, like Aquarian and Evans. Remo has little or NO quality control. I can't tell you how many times I've picked out a set of heads, and started pulling them out of the boxes one by one to notice wrinkles or have the head pull out of the hoops while tuning them the FIRST time. I've NEVER had that with an Aquarian or Evans head. If you want to try a more open drum head try the Aquarian Response 2. Like you I noticed the Performance 2's were just too dead. Also, try the Evans G2. Both excellent choices. But don't buy the entire set until you’re sure that’s the one ya want. Just do one tom. Tune it properly and try it out a while. If you like them, then go get the rest of the set. |

I could have sworn that I read in a Remo catalogue that Ebony heads were slightly thicker than the regular clear versions. I'm not positive on that though. They definitely are slightly deader than the clear versions though. _________________ "Hipness is transient. You've got to change in order to be continually hip." --Vinnie Colaiuta |

| The ebony heads give a slightly more dampened sound than their clear counterparts, but the difference is very slight. BTW, Aquarian also offers black versions of their Classic Clear heads, which are about the same weight as Ambassadors. You might be a good candidate for the Aquarian Jack DeJohnette signature heads by Aquarian. They are single-ply coated heads, but they're black, rather than the usual white coating. The coating is quite thick, as well. Check them out: http://www.aquariandrumheads.com/products/display.asp?id=8 |

| Hmm, bytor, what kind of sound with these signature heads give me. What heads could they be closely compared to, sound wise? |

These are a single-ply head, so you can expect them to be fairly bright. However, the black coating is thicker than standard white coatings, so you will get a little more attack with a warmer decay than a regular single-ply coated head, such as an Ambassador. The thick coating will take out a lot of the "ping" that single-ply heads normally produce, but they should retain some nice resonance and will be much livelier and more musical than your Performance 2s. The fact that they're black is a nice plus, too, since you like the ebonies. As far as I know, they are the only black coated heads on the market. |

well, the ebonies were designed to sound the same as a regular pinstripe, but they turned out a bit darker than the clear version. remo also makes a standard ambassador weight "ebony" head that isnt a pinstripe, if you really want a black head. _________________
