I noticed as of late the second knuckle on my index finger has been feeling sore, worse on my left hand, my set is set up left handed. its not blisters or anything, it just feels like the bones are yelling at me. I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong or what, any ideas would be appreciated. _________________ Stop reading and make music. |

| hmm, only thing i can think of that makes knuckles hurt while playing is either cracking them on a cymbal or gripping sticks too tightly. |

| My fingers sometimes hurt if I don't practice for a while then go at it for a good hour or two. Blisters more often, but those middle knuckles can get sore too. |

| Sounds like a classic case of too much shock being transferred to your hand. Loosen up, watch the Dom Famularo vids at www.vicfirth.com and perhaps let up for a day or two to let them heal. |

| Yeah, usually I can feel the vibration go in to my fingers if I hold the stick too far down on the butt...keep that bouncy feel by having your hand grip a good 5 inches from the butt. |

I agree with you about getting more vibrations down on the very end of the stick, but 5 inches?? You mean you have 5 inches sticking out the back of your hand when you hold your sticks? Wow, that seems excessive. I don't think I would get much rebound at all if I had my hand that far down on the stick.
FatDogg, what kind of sticks are you using, just out of curiosity? |

| Ugh, Bytor, you made me have to go measure where my index and thumb were gripping...it's about 2 1/2, 3 inches at best guess. Ok so I was quite a bit off...but the feeling is what counts, not how many inches. There's that sweet spot where there's no shock, that's what you're looking for. |

| shock transfer also depends on stick size as well as composition. If you're using Ahead sticks, then the metal will have a substancially larger amount of shock as a result. Yeah, I'd work on technique though if it's that much a problem. Getting into bounce technique eliminates alot of the strain that causes drum related injuries. Also, warm up exercises help ALOT. Especially stretching your tendons in your forearms and fingers loosens your hands up. Doing finger exercises gets the blood flowing and makes you sound better too. The ones I do are probably pretty common, there are variations, and feel free to add a weblink for some too. |

there should be no blisters or sore knuckles, honestly with proper technique and exercises, stretching and everything, theres no reason for it*
*unless of course you have some predisposition to athritis, joint pain, etc etc. :P _________________ "The more control you have of the instrument, the more confidence you will get and the more you will be able to express your ideas; Technique is only good if you can use it musically." -J.M. |

I've had all my fingers dislocated from grabbing on to jerseys in football. All the fingers, thumbs have always stayed intact. It was all of the middle knuckles too . Since they were dislocated, I've been able to crack them by wiggling them slighty side to side. It feels good, and they don't have any pain in them unless I don't practice for a few days then bust loose on a set. Just a little sore sometimes, I think it's cuz I lose grip on the stick when I haven't been practicing for a while. Hand will slide down to where my fingers will be absorbing the shock. Oh well. |

ok, I took a break for a day, then did a proper wamrup, made sure I was holding the sticks right and not losing my grip when I hit my cymbals, stopped using my vic firth Rocks and picked up my easton ahead 7a's and the pain didnt come back, still a little stiff though. so... somebody might have been right here... _________________ Stop reading and make music. |

| May I suggest thse Anti-Vibe sticks by Zildjian? They have something in the end so the vibration is greatly reduced, allowing you to play with your hands basically wherever it pleases you on the stick. |
