I have a problem that's been troubling me for awhile and I wondered if someone could help me out. I'm 14 and I've been in my school band for 2 years now and I've decided to buy a set. Since I have some expierence I'm going to buy an intermediate set but I can't decide which one. The 2 I'm considering are the Mapex M Series and the Ludwig Accent Custom Series. I wanted to know which one you guys think is better quality. I'd also like to know if the Fusion style with the smaller toms is worth the extra $30 or so. If anyone else has any other suggestions for a set my local dealers are Ludwig, Legion, Mapex, Peace, and DW and I'm trying to stay in the $600-700 range. Thanks.

I looked at these while shopping for a kit for one of my schools - of the two, I would go for the Mapex. You might also check out Taye if any dealers carry them in your area. Also, there are some deals on the Sonor Force series - the 2003 and 3003 in particular. Finally, have you seen the Pacific FS? I think they are right in that price range, and are great drums for the $$$.

I hope this is useful. Good luck.

I thought Mapex Mars kits were in the ballpark of 800, 900 dollars?

Thanks, I was leaning toward the Mapex originally, just wanted to check out the selection. And the Mars Kits are a little pricy for me unless they come with cymbals because I plan on spending around $200 on the cymbals plus the 6 or 7 on the set is gonna put me a little higher than I wanted to in the first place but oh well.

You can usually find decent used cymbals. Just be sure to check for keyholing and such. The cosmetics of them don't really make a difference.

No doubt about it in my mind -- go for the Mapex. The new M series is supposed to be all maple. For the price (about $700), that's pretty darn impressive. Also, I would go for the fusion sizes. I just like the idea of having a 2" difference down the toms -- going 10", 12", and 14" rather than 12", 13", and 16".

Yea, when I sell my Venus eventually, I'm definately gonna buy a studio fusion sized Mapex Mars. Great drums, right there. I played a fusion sized Sonor for a jazz performance earlier tonight, and man, they were great. Much more adjustable and managable than standard size drums.
