|
|
I just chewed thru 2 pairs of Vic Firth 5bn sticks... I dont know what they are made off, but *Holy Censor, Batman* did they suck in the amount of playing time I got on them... I think I got like maybe 24 hours out of 4 sticks... its sad.. I usualy get like a month or so.. I donno if I am hitting hard(my tom heads arent dented but I am a rim shot king on my snare).
Ive been using this crappy Sound something or other sticks that Guitar center sells in a bunch then gives you a free splash or china.. I beat the living tar out of those sticks and they have YET to even show any real sign of damage. The problem is they are like 7a's(way to small for what I am playing right now)... and they are wooden tip. I loathe wooden tipped sticks.. they loose their sound/ping/quality after a few hours of playing on them(*Holy Censor, Batman* soft spots)...
The only reason I went with the 5bn Vics was I used to use the Rock N.. but i thought those were to thick for me.. I might go back because of what I am playing requires a heavy stick agian, but I LOVED those 5bns... of coarse I didnt have to be bothered by a sales man to get the vics, they had those displays of sticks out ont he floor... the rest of them were behind the counter. I might pick up a set of sticks from Vader and ProMark to see what I like best..
Any recomendations? I like the 5b or 5bns in Nylon tip. No metal sticks, i dont care for their sound at all. They cant be soft like these vics... I also like a a little bit of a longer stick(like 17" or more ) _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

| Well, Carbosticks seem to fit that bill. Although I do wonder about how you're hitting things since I've broken one pair of sticks (tips notwithstanding) in 11 years. |

Carbostick 5B's should indeed suit you nicely, as 007david said. _________________ Steve |

Im a hard hitter in a heavy band.. i think it just has to do with the type of wood in the sticks i use.
Like I said above... Ive been using these cheap wooden tiped sound gear sticks from Guitar Center i got given to me.. I have beaten them JUSt as hard as the vics... yet they refuse to die.
Who makes the sticks you guys suggest? Or is that the brand? I guess i will find out tomorow when I goto guitar center agian... going there is becoming olike a trip to the grocery store.. its almost neccisary anymore. _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

Congrats, guess you arent me and your playing style differs
Ive broken quite a few sticks, fewer heads... the only time I have broken a head is when they have been on WAY past there time.
Anyone else with a constructive reply? _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

I did with the carbosticks (search musician's friend to check them out, then go to your local store to try them out). I was more just curious how it happened rather than demeaning it.
As for the carbosticks I've been using a pair of them (not that brand but same material and such) for the 11 years I've been playing. |

I was refered to these by one of the sales men... I like em so far.. I hammered on them at practice today... they held up nice... Im sure with the way I play i will kill them in a few weeks anyways..
They didnt have the carbosticks at GC.
I break sticks strangly, its either right at the tip or they split from rim shots on the snare.. I love rim shots... I donno why... I only do it to my snare though.
The guy at GC gave me a set of the David Silvera's(guy from Korn)... I loved everything about them except for the tips, they were huge.... almos tlike a 7b marching stick.. PRobably would have been good for indoor drumline type stuff, Just to bulky of a head for me.
Im liking the Promarks.. Ive always had good success with the ones I used to use, but I got alot of them free from hs because the drum instructor owned a music store and just gave them to us. If I could only find a stick with the head of the promarks(or smaller) and the length and shaft type of the Silveras I would be set. _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

oi, Carbon Fibers sticks, those sound pretty silly... I might have to get a set and see how they sound. Im just worrying about the heads getting soft.. which I doubt if 007 has been using them for a extended period of time...
Hrm.. Ill see how these ProMarks hold up then try those and see if I like them. _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

I do not know how many sticks I've broken... I've broken my Lars Ulrich Ahead Eastons (I didn't know you could screw off the tip.... )
but I've went through dozens. I've had HOT sticks...(sticks with glitter in them) and I agree with you on the fact that I loathe the wood tips also. That stuff is for old drummers who didn't realise Nylon on the tip of a stick could work.
Now... I do know how many Rods I've gone through. (cool rods, hot rods, thunder rods, lightning rods)
1 pair of cool rods, I learned from that, and got some hot rods, broke those, and got some lightnings, and didn't like them, so I got thunder rods and broke 2 pairs being that I liked them and got more. I havn't broken my current pair. They've lasted me 3 monthes now! _________________ Curse you and your 9000 titaniums! |

Djeezzzz what a stupid reply.
Are u saying not a single drummer who plays with wooden tips rocks?
Think again mate. I play wooden tips also, but I'm not going to try and prove you I rock.
As I watch your picture, I guess anyone that isn't making death/black/suicide metal noise is an old man? And hey, sure you can be jalous and some old men drumabillities.
Anyway, one brand that makes carbosticks is Ahead. They aren't silly at all, but as far as I know, they only come in black and this could leave some nasty tip marks all over you drums. The ones from Ahead are rather expensive too, check things out, there are some good carbosticks manufacturers for a healthier budget. |

I found them for 20 or so a pair on Musicians friend. Im sure ebay could proove usefull.
As for the color... cant be any different then using the nylons that put white marks all over the cymbals. Look in the pic thread in the dog house of my kit(its on page 33).. you will see what I mean. I could careless about marks on the heads and cymbals, its all about the sound. _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |

yeah, so I broke one of the oak Promarks.
Next on the list... a pair of Morgan Rose non tapered no tipped sticks and a set of David Silvera ones with a short taper. I broke the oak one at the taper.. I tried the Silveras before, but they seemed like to much, then I realized how nuts I play when I do play so there probably gonna be what I need. If I break them its onto the Morgan roses... At this rate I need a set of kevlar sticks.
The carbo sticks better be worth the 20 bucks too... I know carbon fiber is pretty brittle...
If it wasnt for the fact that the Vic Firth Rock N sticks hurt my hands I would use them. There awsome for practicing rudiments in traditional grip(they remind me of marching sticks), but there just to big for my small hands anymore. I used to love them. When I took a year off of playing I bought another pair or 2 and they just make my hands hurt. I had to use them tonight, they take a beating, but they are just to heavy. _________________ Mapex Mars 6 piece - Pert Paragon Cymbals |
