i've just started drumming and i'm going to invest in a set. i've been looking at the Tama Swingstar in musicians friend. Is this a good investment for a beginning drummer? or is the Pearl Forum a better buy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I personally prefer the Tama especially for punk. A lot of people say that the set has nothing to do with overall drum reaction and a lot of people think that it does. In my opinion the pearl sets are a little flabby for a fast crisp punk beat and the hardware is better on the tama. Overall the kit that I owuld choose is the tama, but I would encourage you to go down to your local music shop and play the set. The tama is a great beginning set at a great price.

I should have specified. Tama is a good set for any type of rock music, but I don't find them to be smooth enough for jazz (just my experiance). In other words, yes they would be just fine for metal too. Good Luck

I've been looking Mapex drum sets. They look like the best deal for the price. I don't particularly like pearl. They make the drums kinda cheap. But this is only my opinion
