Has anyone in here played DW's without reinforcement hoops? It looks like they offer that as an option now, maybe they always have? Curious as to how different they sound?

There used to be two different level of DW drums. One, was the collectors series, which was and still is their top of the line shell, then they had a lower priced shell that didnt have the hoops, and arent tuned to resinate with any paritular note, and some other small differences.

I haven't seen the lower end DW drums available for a long time. They don't even list them as a product anymore. Now they have their pacific line instead.

actually...DW's have always been available special order without rerings. I just played a collectors maple set last weekend built it 2001 without them. I personally preffer without rings...less weird overtones.

Strange...i thought the re-inforcement rings were supposed 2 decrease overtones...
I think the cheaper kit ur refering to is the DW works kit....there site doesnt even speak about it!!

All they do is re-enforce the strength of the shell itself. IT has nothing to do with overtones. Overtones can be introduced and removed through proper and improper tuning.

If you saw a collectors series without re-enforced hoops, it wasn't a collectors series. ALL collectors series have re-enforcment hoops.

nah nah lads....You can totally get a maple collectors series kit without reinforcment hoops if you specify that you do not want them...On my kit I specified that I wanted a birch snare rather than a maple snare and they had no problem doing that....DW simply rocks and will do what you want if you got the cash.....Dw will even add reinforcement hoops to birch drums if you told them to but they recommend against it. Not having a reinforced hoop maple Dw kit just seems kind of not very DW-ish if you ask me.....BTW I took soem pics of the inside of my shells and the grain is so much more rich than my secondary kit that also has maple shells. The grain is much tighter and is beautiful....My kit is really nice..... Laughing
