basically, the more strands, the more wires there are in the set of snares. more wires = more sensitive. for what you want, you probably dont need anything special, just whatever came on your drum. the ones with lots and lots of strands (40) are probably designed to be played in more orchestral situations where a very sensitive snare is needed. i dont know how good it would sound if you threw those on, and started really beating the crap out of the snare on your set. _________________

I would go with the 20 strand butyou might like the 24. It depends on the type of music played. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/hotpmetal |

| It depends on how you want your snare to sound. I personally have the 42 strand snares, but I also have a 8.5 deep snare drum. Sensitivity was an issue with a drum that deep so the 42 strands increased that nicely. I know guys that have 6.5 or 4.5 that also use the 42's. For $14.00, it's not like you'll be wasting a lot of money. Try one. If you don't like it, try another. Experiment! |

I've been posting this link a lot tonight, but I'm back visiting the board for the first time in almost a month...

...my "snare wire comparison page" - different makes and models of wires recorded on the same snare drum. |

Thanks for posting that link. Nice job on the recordings and the experiment, in general. That's great reference material. |

Thanks, bytor - I appreciate the comments.
I'm hoping to record some more wires soon (Black Swamp DynamicX, some more Grover wires), and eventually I want to add another step to the comparison process: take four or five of the wires I've already recorded on the one drum, and try them on several different snare drums (i.e., take the FatCats, try them on four drums, take the Blasters, try them on the same four drums, etc.), maybe even working up some simple backing tracks to get an idea of how the snares sound in the context of a mix, rather than just by themselves.
It's far from a perfect comparison - I've got some wires that didn't do well on the Tempus snare I used, but they sound really good on other snares I've got - but at least it gives a chance to a/b some different wires, "all other things being equal." |
