well, if you want a cowbell then get one. if its for more of a rock application, you can get a nice big one with a plastic reinforcement right where you would hit it... i know LP makes one called the "ridge rider" which comes in a smaller "lil ridge rider" size, standard, and a rock style which is made of thicker steel. the standard and rock sizes are quite large, and produce a quick heavy bell sound with little or no ring, and are fairly low pitched. check them all out here

if its for more of a latin application, then i couldnt recommend any single product for you, as there are literally dozens of cowbells made for different styles of latin.

That about sums it up.

Most of my drum set work is with a small steel drum band, and there are lots of opportunities to use cowbells, so I've got three in my setup, and I'm trying to find an excuse to work a fourth one in as well.

I don't know if it's the best choice, but it's a good one. Toca makes some cool cowbells, Meinl too, and of course LP makes a bunch, but the Rock Ridge Rider is my favorite. It sounds exactly the way a cowbell should sound, IMO.

Not to be rude, but if it sounds like what a cowbell should sound like in your opinion, than why would you suggest anythig else?

How about because his opinion of what a cowbell should sound like might not be the same as mine.

Yeah i have a protector on my Tambourine and it really helps. I had to play cowbell on a song for Jazz band in school, and the Bell didn't have a protector on it. Well the stick was halfway gone when the song was done. I just played with it until it was completely through. After i was done i looked down and there was a pile of sawdust on the floor.
