well, it cant be vintage, since mapex was founded maybe 15 years ago. old, yes. vintage, no.

and about these toms... do they still have and lugs at all on the bottom of the drum? and if not, is there holes drilled in the shell where they used to be?

go to photobucket.com and register an account, then you can upload photos and post links to them on message boards or websites or simply IM someone the link instead of e-mailing them the pic.

Looks to me like the previous owner just removed the bottom heads and rims. Are the bottom lugs still intact? It's a little hard to tell from the pictures but, it looks like you just need rims, heads and lug bolts.

By the way, I doubt they are vintage depending what your definition is of vintage. I doubt they are any older than 10 years, if that. Just a guess though. Good luck.

well if youve ever seen the jelly bean set, it has no bottom heads either, and its an old set too, but is it still ok to play without bottom heads?

Sure, you can definitely play without the bottom heads. In fact, some drummers prefer them that way. Who knows, that may be why your kit ended-up without the bottoms. Wasn't that a popular set-up in the mid-seventies?

By the looks of the pictures you posted it looks like the bottom portion of the drums had lugs. Personally, I would buy some rims and put on some resonant heads. I think you get a fuller sound with some overtones when you have them.

That kit is from the mid 90s. I have the exact same kit as seen here . I accualy emailed Mapex with my serials to find out what year it was from. They said mine was from 95. 9 Ply maple, I love it. I get such a good sound from it. You cant tell but mine is a 6 pc.

You just need to find a set of buttom hoops(and lugs) and your set. Just count the number of lugs you have on each drum and just goto a music store and tell them that you need so many lugged hoops for a standard set. Oh yeah, and lugs.
