Please use this thread to keep a catalogue of all good drum and drum related links. Newbies can use this as a research PRIOR to asking questions to educate themselves. Please feel free to ad good drum sites (and I'm talking info...I don't want your myspace music page or other crap like that. i will moderate this heavily!), Thanks for your time!!!

I'll start

How to set up your drumset

basic info regarding drum shells, heads, sticks, cymbals, e-kits, and hardware

Great site for rudiments, basic rhythms, videos, and info

great site for videos and reference on past and present great drummers

also would like to contribute, this has helped me with tuning and other knowledge of drum heads

its videos, so it might be a little easyer to follow, basic idea, helped me a lot on how to properly tune, and seat drum heads, knowing when to get new ones, etc.

May I ask a question? I played along to "Song for the Dead" by Queens of the Stone Age a little while ago, and this was my real first time I'd "let go" and just hammered my kit. Afterwards, my right hand experienced just the slightest cramp just below my last 3 fingers.
Is this a bad thing? And is there something I'm doing wrong?

EDIT: I think I posted in the wrong place. Still, it'd help if someone gave me a straight answer.

RIMSHOTS:

What's the deal? I haven't really looked into on how to do them, but what would benefit me by doing so? How could I use them compared to a normal whack on the snare?

rimshots are noticeably louder than a normal hit on the snare, so theyre great for accents.

no one answered this? ok. i'll give it a shot.

first, exercise it more. keep a steady beat using a stick and your weaker hand for 5 minutes more than you use your stonger hand, per day. if you can do more, go ahead, but don't get sore. pain is your body's way of saying, "knock it off."

next:

the goal: go out of your way to play accents with your left hand.

how to start:

i used to use flash cards (i have no idea what the australian version of a "flash card" is, but you're resourceful - you'll figure it out).

flash cards are usually 3 inches x5 inches in the states. that roughly translates to 7.62 cm x 12.something cm, made of thick paper, about the weight/thickness of a business card.

grab a card and write out a normal 5, 7 or 9 stroke roll, single paradiddle, double paradiddles, ratamaques, ruffs (or drags, whatever), etc.

mark an accent the first left-hand stroke on the first rudiment.

grab another rudiment and mark an accent over the second left-hand stroke.

make another card, accent the first and the fourth left hand strokes.... keep going until you have 4 or 5 cards.

you should have about 15 cards.....

shuffle the cards.

lay them out on the floor.

play the cards as they fall.

good luck. may the thwack be with you.
