Ok so the cymbals that came with my Guitar Center kit are basically throw aways, I never expected them to sound good. But I've been trying to find something better but I cant' find what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for hi hat cymbals that have a very clean, shimmery, icy, metalic sound. Almost like they hiss instead of the gong type tones almost every one I've tried has.
An example off the top of my head is the hihat sound in Toto's "I'll be over you". It's so bright and crisp it almost sounds like a shaker. |

It sounds like you're hearing what microphones do to hihats rather than hihats themselves. However, some higher end hihats are designed to accentuate the "sizzle and chick". |

I think the sound is really dependent on how far you lift your foot when playing open hi-hat. To far, and the sound is ruined by vibrations of the cymbals, and not far enough, it still gives a chick sound. Just experiment with that, I have PTS3's, and i've made them sound good with practice. _________________

Most of what you're hearing is EQ and Reverb put into the final mix unfortunately.
If you get to play gigs where the are mics on everything you will be able to achieve this sound.
To get as CLOSE TO this sound as possible - goto your local drum store and spend a while trying out various different hats.
The way you play them will also make a big difference to how they sound. |

| Toto eh? I think Jeff Pocarro used Paiste 602 hats in the studio. Icy metallic sound? Go with Paiste 2002 soundedge, or any Paiste heavy hi hat set. I have heard some Sabians that have that sound too, but I know Paiste is very consistant with that sound. |
